What happened here? (Updated pics)
A little help with this Washington that I pulled out of a mint set. This quarter is amazingly mark free.....except for the elephant in the room. Ideas?

I think it is a naturally-occuring shallow spot next to the area of the planchet that would have been pushed up during the upset mill (rimming process).
And so it is simply an area where the planchet texture didn't get struck out.
I'm working on the full obverse and recerse photos.
Anybody else have any ideas as we have a couple different theories?

That was my first thought---perhaps struck through grease.
