Collecting Russian Coins

What reference books or auction catalogs would you recommend I study if I want to learn the specifics about collecting old Russian coins (18th, 19th, and early 20th century up to early 1924 or so, around the time of Lenin's death)?

Definitely Bitkin. Don't have the full title, but it's a two volume set.

Thanks. A quick Google search tells me that's a hard book to find!

subscribe to all top Auction houses around the world.
many issue special catalogues for their Russian coin auctions.....
some prices are astronomical....and, from what I hear, if Russian buyers attend an auction, they pay CASH on the spot.

You need a copy of Uzdenikov, Russian Coinage to 1917; Conros Catalog (think Red Book for Russia); and Krause for mintages and whatnot for common stuff, etc. auction catalogs are good too, for information and great pictures. The Russian market has been really inflated for several years now. Finding good stuff on a budget can be a challenge but satisfying if you are patient. Anything rare should also carry a good deal of suspicion as a lot of forgeries, old and modern circulate frequently.

This is a very active board with some very knowledgable collectors. You'll need deep pockets.
