I've never heard of this but that doesn't really mean anything at all.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

If it is true, it would be interesting, but would not make a bit of difference to me in terms of wanting it more or less, or what I would pay for it.

    Not my money!

If the set is such a great deal with so much potential (grades, varieties), then why is he/she selling it on eBay for $189?

apparently you are intrigued by "sealed" and "first coins issued" which is the sellers intent. the only sealed stuff I believe is actually sealed from the Mint is lots which are in sealed boxes.

So, I sent the seller a question asking for any reference he had for the "blue" print and here's
    the response I received back:

    Dear bobandlinda1,

Hi and thanks for your note. No, I have no reference I can send you to specifically. My brother had his own coin shop in Indianapolis for many years, and he was an avid proof set collector from the 1950's. He always was on the lookout for blue date sets he told me on different occasions as they were the sets minted first versus the standard black date sets. I was able to find just 2 about 6 months ago, and have already sold one. The feedback I received from the buyer was thrilled with the deep mirrors and fine look of her coins. I decided to sell this last set as I am not a proof set collector for the most part. 1958 is also a key date set, which was a real bonus when I found them.

If you have any other questions, please let me.know.

    Jeff

I think you struck pay dirt. All you need now is some mayo and a couple slices of bread.

First the seller come up with a plausible story, but has no proof or reference to back it up. Then he goes on to tell how the buyer of the other set hit the jackpot, thus implying that you will also. In the eBay write-up he states how he will probably never be able to find another, meaning this may be your last chance to ever get one. This sounds like typical scammer hype to me, and I'd stay far far away from that deal.

It looks to me like a non-dated aftermarket "replacement" proof set envelope, and the date was added with a rubber stamp.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I do not know who rubber-stamped the date on this envelope.

It could have been made early in 1958 before the pre-printed envelopes were ready, or

It could have been made late in the year after they ran out of pre-printed envelopes and did not feel like printing any more for just a few late orders, or

It could have been privately stamped after the set left the mint.

Rather the proverbial pig in a poke, eh?
