Summer: great time for family fun, but not so great for the coin trade? Or is it?

From what I can tell, living in Reno and so close to Tahoe, is that people are vacationing in droves. To be specific, I have never before seen this area so innundated with out of town cars. Don't even try to park anywhere near the lake after 9AM.

It would seem, conversely, that except for us dyed-in-the-wool hardcore few, the world is taking a break from collecting.

This would be good if you are looking for a deal. They are out there, and there are likely fewer competitors to drive up the price.

For those of us trying to sell, however...

Thoughts?

Auction prices on the stuff I'm after seem plenty strong.......

I might have to agree with you that for the really nice stuff, there will always be competitive buyers.

When I first started, early summer time of June and July were the slowest time of the year by far mostly because there were no major shows in early summer. Now with summer FUN and Baltimore it isn't as slow as it used to be although things are never as busy as other times of the year.

We're still real busy around here. Summer does tend to be slower, plus right between Thanksgiving and New Year's, but this year we haven't seen any slowness at any time.

I really don't see any seasonality in this business.

I open the shop every day but Sunday and never (rarely) work shows.
Today I saw three people stranded outside my shop in a van. They sported tattoos, and cell phones,... but were out of gas. I gave them $3 after they asked for five and said, "this will get you about 20 miles. Do you mean to tell me you are on the road with NO MONEY ? " They said, "yeah"... All 3 walked away. The one in the stocking cap (90 degrees outside) asked if I would keep an eye on his van because the window did not go up. image Nodding, as if to assure him I was armed and dangerous, they walked off.
When only one returned later, he had gas in a can, but the extension wasn't enough to penetrate that spring loaded plate in the mouth of the feed tube going into the tank, thus preventing the fuel from pouring into the opening. I got a stick on the ground , he'd already cut the bottom out of a plastic soda pop bottle and made a makeshift funnel and told me it didn't work. So I asked him, "Have you ever heard of McGyver ? " Then I shoved the stick through the center of his makeshift funnel and opened that "valve".
He said, "you really helped me enough, thanks... I can get it now". It was like an engineering feat and for once this summer, I felt useful as a coin dealer.
I thought to myself , "God, the things we do for love" I'm so glad there's ebay. It helps pay the fuel costs.

Edit to go from never to "rarely".

We are here in Tahoe, and the roads are fuller than in any previous summer.
But only because it is so hot anywhere else.

The coin market is alive, and the last Heritage sale was great for most consignors. An 1817/3 CBH in PC 64 went for over double guides. setting a record at 61K.
And the other CBH's in high grade did almost as well.

I am not a bullion buyer or trader, but those that prefer hard assets are still buying rare coins, even if they are not assembling large stores of bullion. Hard to find
rarities will sell well anytime( almost).

Now with the Internet, I don't see any slow period. We have auctions on holidays, Superbowl Sunday etc., and they are all well-attended.

There were plenty of people at Summer FUN and too many people bidding on the coin I won at the HA Summer FUN auction. Sure some people take a break but I try not to take a break from opportunities. I'm building a set and the coins keep becoming available. They aren't going to wait on me!

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

Slumping PM prices aside, numismatically relevant coins are pretty strong sellers. Early commems are soft as ever right now, just picked up a beauty crusty toned Bay Bridge last week for $90.
