I like this auction, especially the part in the description where the seller says "Here is your chance to own a PCGS body bagged coin without paying $10!"

He added this to the auction:

"PS -
We will all get along much better if nobody asks why I was dumb enough to submit 2002 quarter with a big scratch in it to PCGS...

And I won't ask YOU why you are looking to bid on a 2002 quarter with a big scratch on it.

I kind of like the coin, in a warped sort of way. The whole idea of collecting body bagged coins as a separate collection does have an appeal to it.

Maybe one of the graders scratched the coin while grading it. Where is customer service when you need it.

OK I confess. I submitted an order direct from the mint blind. - as is - unopened and I am personally responsible for making more MS64/65's 25c than anyone in history.

But I got a nice set for myself and also a 2002-P SAC $1 MS68 that someone was saavy enough to pick up for $102

plus a West Point MS70

What makes you think the scratch was on it when it left your place going to pcgs? They body bagged an ike for a rim dent/scratch. I thought ok I didnt look at the rim. When i got it back there was a scratch completely across the face from rim to rim. It looks like a giant pair of tweezers was used to drag it out of the flip. The scratch was a large v shape. I went over this coin with a 10 x mag light because i wanted to be sure it was a dcam before i sent it off. There's no way that scratch was on the Ike when it left here. I have no proof so I cant say they did it at pcgs, but i know what i saw before and after pcgs.

This is a BIG scratch and I'm sure it couldn't be caused by dropping it.

Maybe the grader got sick of me wasting his time with my MS64's.

But by the way the bidding is going so far, I think I'll get my screwdriver out and start scratching up some more quarters.

Hey neighbor-

I actually live in Oceanside and have my PO box in Vista but I've talked with Richard a few times. Nice guy and good on coins. He doesn't deal much with moderns, so I've never bought anything from him (I've sold a few things to him though)

I was in there a couple of weeks ago talking with him about building a PCGS gold type set. Since I was spending more than $1000 it took care of the California sales tax issue and I wanted to spend the money with a local guy instead of on the Internet. He didn't really have anything in stock at the time that would have fit in (either too early,too nice$ or NGC) and said to come back the week of the 22nd, so I'll stop by and see what he has. From what I showed him on prices I've seen on eBay (and what I've paid so far) I may be in for some sticker shock.

In the mean time, the bidding bug kept calling me and I wound up getting 75% of my set already (at a nice price). I've only got two more to get now.

My New Gold Type Set

Rick Tomaska of R&I coins is also based in Encinitas (at least his phone and PO box are) so I've had to pay tax on some of his coins. Once I tried to upgrade with one of thier coins and couldn't get an answer for a couple of weeks so I gave up. The gal I was talking with doesn't get to talk with Rick (only Sasha does) so he may not live there? (Or maybe he doens't like anybody but Sasha?)
