  It definitely looks like a 28 but is that a mintmark there in the rays on the reverse?

  I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  Too far gone to determine whether it's S-mint or P-mint.
  
  But I also believe it's a '28 (not '23)

  I just can't imagine someone would carry a key date as a pocket piece till it lost that much skin.

  Odds favor it being a much more common 28-S with the mint mark worn away.
  Either way, the year is 1928 not 1923.

  If you look at the VAMWorld website, there are several die markers listed for the four known genuine pairs of 1928 dies. Most of these are pretty subtle die marks and gouges so it might be hard to authenticate your worn specimen. I would start there, and start with the assumption that you have a 28-S. It might be easier to prove that it isn't a 28-P. Keep in mind that there really are plenty of 28-S coins in circulated grades in the wild.

  hmmmmmmm........I think most collectors would buy that one in a heartbeat if a 28p, I know I would. Great hole filler.....28s would be melted away.

  That's what I was thinking also . . . but it'll prolly be a hard knock getting it into a "P" slab.

  Even if it's an "S", it should be worth a premium if it makes the PO01 grade.

  But if PCGS cannot determine if it is an S or P, it probably won't even make a holder.
