Post your bust quarters R4 and higher only.

Since there is a bust halves thread already running (albeit slowly), let's see if we can draw some cool quarters out of the woodwork. These lists are always fun to come across.

Pretty cool clash marks on the obverse. I don't remember seeing them before, although I'm sure I have.

    Hey scubafuel,

I don't own any Bust Quarters, let alone any R4 varieties, but I thought I'd let you know your Browning 9 is in a PCGS CoinFacts. The pics are pretty nice, and the high-res pics show those arrow clashes @ the cap pretty well.

Maybe you already knew... but in case you didn't, you do now. image

Thanks for the Coinfacts link Brian. I had seen that 1818 B-9 around a bit before I bought it. It's a hard one to upgrade.

    Here is an 1825 B-1, R-5.

    1827 B-2 Original (Trial piece or "Essay") a.k.a. Judd -48a. R8, with 2 known.

Although graded PR66 by PCGS, I believe it should be designated "MS" or "SP", as the dies had not yet been polished and the planchet was not burnished. (The obverse die was, in my opinion, polished after the "Essays" were struck, and before the 1827 B-1 Originals were struck.)

The 1827 is incredible! How long have you owned it for? Anyone have a nice 1823 to go with it?

Here is an 1828 B-2. It's interesting that every coin with this reverse die is a tough variety.

I've had the 27 for about 7 years. A 23 would be nice, but what I really want is a gem 1827 B-1! Preferably the Garrett coin. Does anybody here know where that coin resides? Even if it's not for sale, I'd like to study it closely, mostly to see if there's any further evidence that my coin was struck before the B-1's.

    Here's an 1806 B-7, R5

    image

    From Steve Tompkins' book:

"This reverse is somewhat of an anomaly. The legend was punched in [the Rev. H working die] utilizing different style and size letters than all of the other reverses except for Reverse I, which was only used for the 1806 B-8 die marriage [the rarest variety in the entire draped bust series]. Both of these reverse working dies were probably the last ones produced in 1806, or possibly the first ones produced. Also we find the re-use of the smaller star punch abandoned at the end of 1805."

"The early die stage [stage 1] with no reverse cracks [and missing the mysterious row of raised segments between stars 4-6 which appears in stages 2-5] is the rarest"

1835 Capped Bust Quarter "Houck's Panacea Baltimore" Maryland, Counterstamp, HT-140, Rarity-7.

This is a newly discovered date as up until now none have been known dated beyond 1819 on a capped bust quarter.

I think you got a good price there. Even R-5 small size quarters don't seem to command much premium until XF-40 or so. That may change however.
