Do Coin Shops ACTUALLY carry insurance?

djmdjm Posts: 1,565 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bought some coins from a shop in another state. I paid for the coins and the shop shipped the coins. The package went missing in transit (So. Cal. of course). I e-mail the shop requesting they request the post offic put a trace on the package to see if it can be located, I get no reponse to the e-mail. I call them and ask what they could do about the lost package. The reponse is we mailed the package, the post office accepted the package, there is nothing more we can do. I suggested they file an insurance claim for the value of the missing mercahndise and reship the items. They said the did not have insurance for this type of loss.

If they do, I'm sure there is a rather large deductible.

Did you ask for (and pay for) postal insurance?

That said, their response seems to be poor customer service.

They're responsible for it until you receive it. How they insure while the coin is in transit is not your concern. You file a claim against them, and they collect from whatever insurance they have. If they have no insurance, it sucks to be them. It could be, however, that the amount of the purchase was below their shipping loss deductible, which might be why they said they don't have insurance for that type of loss, in which case it still sucks to be them, because as mentioned above, you don't care what kind of insurance they have.

If you paid by credit card, do a charge back.

I'm sure that other potential customers would like to know about this company's selling practices prior to making any purchases.

If you paid with a credit card file a complaint and let them deal with a chargback and file a complaint with the various places we all file complaints with when companies do this kind of thing. Outrageous.

It is the sellers responsibility to ensure that the product gets to the customer or issue a refund. Period.

Here's what you're probably dealing with.

Shippers know that more than 99.9% of uninsured packages make it through but only about 99% of insured ones do.
There is a tendency for them to believe that recipients who claim they didn't get a package to be opportunists who
noticed the package wasn't insured and want their shipment and their money back. It is usually the case. They ship
some material uninsured to reduce costs and prices. They'll usually drag their feet in making "refunds" so the coun-
terparty gives up. Trying to convince them you really didn't get the package won't help. The best bet is to try to work
something out with them so neither party is out the full amount. You can, of course, press the issue and get full reim-
bursment but this can be a big deal on small shipments.

If the package was over $100 or so then it's likely they never even sent it since it would be pretty risky to ship unin-
sured to unknown recipients. Post office thieves don't get all the missing mail and some does actually just get lost. Re-
cipients get a lot of the "missing" mail because it is delivered improperly or without record.

Insurance protects the seller, not the buyer. If you didn't receive the coin that's their problem. If they didn't insure it that too is their problem.

If you paid by credit card do a charge back.
