1917-d BUFF 2 FEATHER IN FINE

I just won an ebay auction for a 1917-D Buffalo that looks like it is a 2 feather in FINE. I paid $42.00 so we will see when it arrives in a few days. I will post pics then if it is the variety. Tomorrow I will post a link to the auction so you all can see the pics once the coins is in the mail! LOL.

On a side note, are the 2 feather varieties starting to get better premiums? Ron Pope's book says it is the hardest of the 3 for 1917 to find but what about the ranking of all the 2 feathers?

What would it take to have a greysheet like listing for varieties? That way dealers can gauge value and possibly create interest in more varieties.

Reading further-the downside of having a listing in the Greysheet is that it alerts dealers as to what is out there, therefore making cherrypicking these more difficult. The very toughest of the 2F dates seem to be the 1916-S and the 1923, both of which show no trace at all of the feather. Other tough ones are the 1915, 1915-D, 1920-D, 1925-D, 1926-D, and 1927-D & S.

About three months ago this same seller had another 17d but it looked like a 3 1.2 legger. I asked for a better pic and he pulled the auction. so learned to not ask anymore.

Yeah I don't know if the "two pizza" guy comes here. He does post a lot of coins on Ebay.

Kudos to you for wading through all the pizza guy's listings. I've tried but decided I'd rather see bigger pics of coins than photos of sticker encrusted 2X2s.

I can't bring myself to look thru his overgraded, overpriced, and overhyped stuff either. I know he can be cherrypicked but I just don't have the patience.

It does get tiring but his stuff is usually a grade lower than stated but on a variety that's still a good deal imho.

When I look at the pic in the listing, something tells me it's a nice deal, for a nice coin with nice eye appeal.

    Seriously, though, nice pick!

No offense to the seller, but I wish I could block those listings from my searches. The sub-par pics and multiple nonsensical stickers are akin to visual waterboarding.

I have also decided to not buy/bid on any 2 feather lower than a fine except for the rare ones that Ron listed above.

Looks like the designer's initial F may be missing too -- a double variety.

The coin is very disappointing. It is a 2 feather but looks only GOOD not near FINE. I have sent seller a request to refund half. Here are the pics:

Hilarious that you're out cherrypicking, then want half off when the grade isn't to your liking? It was pretty clear what the actual grade was from the photos, particularly since you were able to make out the variety. image

    Originalisbest,

His pictures are not very clear on the variety and the grade. If it had been a VG then it would have been fine. I know his stuff is over graded.

Are you the pizza man?? If so, sorry if this has offended you but the greysheet for a G is $15-$16.50, VG - $24-26; FINE - $42-$46. I usually will take one lower grade for a variety but this difference is too much. I know 1917-D 2F are hard to come by but this is almost triple what a normal 17-D would bring.

Ron, how rare is the 17-D? I know a lot of this is subjective but from your extensive experience is this coin a good deal? PM me if you do not want to chime here.

    Tony-

The '17-D is scarce-probably somewhere in the middle of the pack as far as rarity goes. As has been said above-gotta watch the 2 pizzas guy-consistent overgrading etc, etc. Is that a scratch I see on the obverse? If so I'd return the coin.

    Ron,
Thanks for the reply. The scratch and the very low grade were not clear on the original pics. So I will send it back for a full refund but it will cost me a couple bucks. The price of previewing! I understand now why you all are reluctant in the pizza guys auctions.

    Ron,
Is there an updated list of 2 feathers by URS scale? I know your book has it but how old is the data?

    Thanks

Nope, I'm not that guy. But if you're out cherrypicking and then want to dicker on final price it seems pretty ballsy to me. If you're really not happy with the coin and are willing to return it and take the return shipping hit, then that's fine.

How did you know I have big balls? lol I don't see a problem sending the coin back.
I had a dealer last weekend who knows I cherrypick inspect a 1918d buff cause it has a diagonal line in the bottom of the 8. I am a little upset that he checked but it is within his right to do so. The overdate has a diagonal of only about 20 degrees and this was about 45 degrees. Also no line in the top part of the 8. I am going to post picks of it tomorrow for everyone to examine.

What edition of my book do you have? Not much has changed lately as far as URS ratings go.
