How did the "Joshua and Ally Walsh" pedigree disappear on this 1877 IH PCGS MS65RD label?

shylockshylock Posts: 4,288 ✭✭✭
The 1877 IH PCGS MS65RD that sold for $29,900 in the memorable Ally/Walsh FUN sale of January 4th, 2006.

Now it's a no-name label, with the same cert#, in the upcoming CSNS Heritage Sale.

Under what circumstances can PCGS erase the pedigree from their label, yet keep the same cert # ?

(My only guess is it can only be done by the original submitter, in this case Ally/Walsh.)

The two coins, in case you don't think they're the same:

Ally/Walsh Jan 2006, CSNS May 2007.

Just a simple reholder asking to remove the pedigree would do it I think.

Yeah, why not remove the pedigree if it means nothing to you and likely wouldn't mean much to potential buyers?
I would think PCGS would do it for a reholder and request.
They still get the money and the database doesn't change (same cert #), right?

I bought a few of the large cents with the walsh pedigree. I heard later that it is a pseudonym.

If I were to buy a coin with such a label on it, one of the first things I would do would be to send it in for reholder service so that it would be returned without the name on the label.

IIRC, the name is a tribute to the grandchildren of the owner of the set. He has in the past posted here under the name, Joshua. He and I had a couple of common interests (both numismatic and professional) in the past.

Some pedigrees are meaningful and others are not. Often, it is in the judgment of the new owner that it matters most.

I have some Mercs with the Joshua II pedigree. I like them and would never consider having them reholdered.

PCGS will remove a pedigree if the owner wishes. That's probably what happened.

Maybe not this particular coin, but another possible reason is to have the coin appear fresher than it is, not previously auctioned or not known to potential bidders in this sale from being a coin that sold within the last few years??

We bought a couple of coins in Heritage's FUN auction of the Troy Wiseman sale that were ex Ford (though not described as such in the Heritage catalog) which had Troy Wiseman on the PCGS label.

In most of these cases, the coins were in the Ford collection for decades and were owned by Mr. Wiseman for 6 months or a year.

We had the coins reslabbed with the Ford pedigree which we thought was more meaningful.

Kind of like Mr Contursi calling the Carter specimen, the "Contursi 1794 dollar"

I have seen one of the 12 1951 PCGS 67 reds in person, it had bad carbon spots and was offered by the same southern California dealer who sold me a 66 that later plussed. This Walsh one looks nice, anyone seen it in person? BTW, it sold for $10,350.00 in 2006 (includes BP). I did modify the image.

I corresponded with Barry around the time he sold his Joshua II Merc Reg Set. And I have one coin from his Reg Set. The only reason I would remove or edit the pedigree from this coin would be if I felt the need to add my name to it...but unlikely.

Reholdering has never changed the cert number.
