A Question on 1976 Ikes - Type 1 vs. Type 2

Is there any information on distribution of these from the mint? Are Type 1 P mints coins found in certain sets/rolls/bags or locations? Or is it random?

Any info appreciated. I know nothing about these.

The Type 1 dollars were minted in 1975 and the Type 2 were minted in 1976. Each were distributed in their respective mint sets (i.e. 1975 and 1976). Both varieties are found in original rolls and bags, too.

There are no 1975-dated Ikes. As I recall, 1976 Type 1 Ikes are seen in 1975 mint sets, Type II in 1976 sets.

These type I's were made until around July of 1975 and then they switched to type II. Any bag
dated early in '75 will contain type I's. All '75 mint sets contain type I's. Quality in mint sets is
atrocious but rolls are very elusive. Mint set coins are not especially well struck and contain large
amoubnts of retained planchet marking. Most were mishandled after striking. About 4% are chBU
    and Gems are scarce.

There might be mules of type II/ type I but none have been reported yet. The biggest obverse dif-
ference is a long crease on the neck. Mint technicians were not always good at changing out both
dies in switchovers and a type I reverse might have been left behind.

  • In 1975 in Framingham Massachusetts there was a coin dealership and a bank in the same office building. All the dealer had to do to get 1976 type 1 dollars was to walk a few steps to the bank and ask.
