Peace dollar PCGS question

Hi Folks,

A question: I have noticed that some mint state 1921 Peace dollars in PCGS holders carry the designation or phrase “high relief” on the insert, but most do not. However, I thought all 1921 Peace dollars were minted in high relief. If so, why the “high relief” designation on only some inserts?

Thank you very much.

George

Great question. My Guess is that PCGS had a change in perspective about putting it on the label.

  • As far as I know, some did not have high relief. My books say otherwise, but somewhere I remember hearing the fact that not all are high relief. igradems70 I believe.

It's just a label thing by PCGS. Nothing to do with the coins. All are high relief.

  • Thanks, morgansforever. I set up an account 6 or 7 years ago, and occasionally log on to enjoy the debates, but haven't had a whole lot to add! That being said, I am going to post another question in a new thread, asked somewhat facetiously but also seriously, which has been bugging me.

They'll most ALWAYS be right, so consume as much as you can. I, personally, can't see anyone that knows about numismatics would say there were some '21 Peace NOT struck in HR. It's a basic thing....everyone knows the '21 is a key coin in the Peace series, and I'd think most would know about it's HR strike status. Regardless, you now know ANY '21 Peace you get, regardless of condition/grade, was originally struck in HR.

Maybe a bit of help from some experts, in regard to those '22 Peace struck in HR (as the Redbook states a total mintage of just over 35,000 of the '22 struck in HR, but some of our experts may know better), but, yes, there were also some struck in High Relief in '22, Taylor. Just FYI.
    I'll come up with something.

All 21 Peace dollars are High Relief.

Most 1922 Peace Dollars are Low Relief. There are a few in medium relief and a few in high relief.

All subsequent peace dollars are low relief.
