Does the PCGS "Sniffer" detect artifical toning?

If so, they would never slab it in a secure holder correct?

Video did not answer the question for me.
    Maybe I missed it.

Some AT Coins are done with chemicals which the sniffer would certainly detect.

Other AT Coins are done in an accelerated environment (AT) which the sniffer would NOT detect since nothing was added to the surface of the coin.

Wouldn't it be easier to let the grader detect AT? Is the sniffer really needed?

Also, if you like the toning on a coin, does it matter if it's AT? image

This is personal opinion obviously. For me, AT is distracting. In fact I generally don't like any toning. And yet I have a couple (2-3) toned coins which I absolutely love. It really is in the eye of the beholder.

  • I got from the video that it can only detect AT the SECOND time it comes through, is that true?

You can not smell heat when it's not there anymore can you? If the process does not leave a residue then no the sniffer will not detact it.
Graders can still make the call if it is not right to what they think color progressions should be though.
And yes there is the chance they can think it is market acceptable then it don't matter how it toned.

Only on the condition that it wasn't toned the FIRST time it went through. Even then, it would have to be fairly dramatic.

This entire AT/NT subject is only relevent when "chemicals" are used for toning as you either like it........or you don't.
