Bank account for coins

hello!
I was wondering if people use a credit card/ debit card to pay for coins at coin shows, and if it is worth getting one to use at this age. I know it has perks for online, but what about in the coin shows?

Most dealers do not take credit cards at shows. Lots of reasons. Cash is preferred. Some will accept checks if they know you, or will ship the coin once the check clears.

At your age I'd guess that cash is your only reasonable option. Besides, credit cards are evil. When you qualify for one, have it for special situations. But try not to use it.

    Hi Taylor,

My dad told me - "if you can't pay for it, you can't pay for it". CC's are evil is right. 12% a MONTH - leads to trouble. Many pay 19% or 20%! Mine, (yes I have one image ) is 12% - I just called and said "gimme a lower rate!" and they did. I'm no financial wiz, but stay away from plastic. It's a good ecological move too image

    Best wishes,

Cash is king at shows. Checks are taken by some dealers if they know you. I've only seen a couple of dealers at shows take credit cards and even then, I'm sure they'd much rather prefer cash.

Going somewhat astray here since you asked, I don't see what's wrong with getting a credit card but definitely pay off your entire balance month to month and on time. Don't buy what you can't afford. Those interest rates can send you into a downward spiral quickly if you carry a balance.

Only way one should purchase coins with a credit card is to pay the bill in full each month.
For coin shows they are not normally accepted because the seller pays about 5% fee on all purchases.
At your age just for the safety factor a prepaid debit card would be my recommendation or a checking account.

In fact that is the only way it is legal for you to do it online. Minors are not able to join into legal contracts which is what is being done when one buys online especially on eBay and any of the auctions firms that sell coins.

Having a checking account has nothing to do with balancing your budget. Just don't pay out more than you earn.

I should listen to my own advice ... image
Let's try not to get upset.

Good advice Eric , i got similar advice , if i cant pay for it i can't afford it and therefore don't need it , ive never had a credit card in my entire life , there's no need for one if you live within yer means.

If you plan on getting a Paypal account for Ebay or online purchases you do not have to have a credit card.
You can open a PP account with a checking accout. No cc needed.

What kind of CC charges you 12% per month?

    None. That's the annual rate.

Anyway, I'd suggest that it's worth having a credit card for all kinds of reasons. The trick is to use it intelligently. Maybe difficult, but hardly impossible.

Mr Eureka puts it nicely with using the card "intelligently". Cash back, or reward points add up. I wish I could use them for coins. Pay off the charges before the interest accrues and it's like free money, except with responsibility attached.

...in 1997, my step-mother got a pre-approved credit card application in the mail for $500 in our dogs name... Just for giggles, she sent it back and wallah; she received a Providian Visa with a $500 credit limit in our dogs name. She never used it, but I'm sure she kept it image

Use cash. Credit cards are not for you. Most dealers hate them

When it comes to coins, if you want the best prices use cash. It is about the only thing I use cash for anymore.

It is so hard to let go of what you just bought right after your purchased it, but bringing a bag of tradeables is a very smart idea indeed! image

For a variety of reasons the vast majority of dealers do not accept credit cards at coin shows. Bring cash or checks.
