A very good perspective on the ANA Board of Governors election...

Larry Shepherd posted the following opinion piece at CoinWeek. I agree with almost everything he says.

<< <i>I once donated my $10,000 winnings in the PCGS grading contest to the young numismatists program. Since then, I have found the ANA to be more and more irrelevant. I am no longer a member and cannot imagine what it would take to rejoin. I love coins but am totally turned off by the politics of that organization. >>
Larry's comments about the YN program and education are spot on. No one is opposed to either of those concepts. Even though I was an Outstanding YN of the Year, I have a hard time advocating for additional YN programs. Why? First, we have a number of damn good ones already. Second, we have over $500,000 in funds dedicated to YN programs. Additional support in that area, with the limited budgets we have, is hard to advocate for.

P.S. At least one candidate this year has a platform calling for increasing YN support and Numismatic Education. Keep that in mind when voting.
Personally, I am a member of the ANA and I use the ANA library, but when it comes to our club membership, it seems like money wasted.

As for the ANA, I wonder how many people, dealers particularly, who are like me are only members of the ANA because to hold a dealer badge at an ANA show requires organization membership?

<< <i>I am president of one of the local coin clubs and one of our members is the current VP who is going to become the next President of the ANA and I have no clue what the ANA does for it's member coin clubs... that isn't right.

I am curious if that VP even collects.

The future of the hobby is NOT NECESSARILY with YN's, it is with the AARP. People who are 50+ have more disposable income, there are more of them, and "50 is the new 40."
