Jansjo USB

Many of you who take your own coin photos may use the IKEA Jansjo gooseneck LED lights. I just learned that IKEA is now selling a USB version of this light. I don't know yet how well it performs, but I'll be buying some this weekend and will give a quick report. Til then, here is the IKEA page describing them. Can't go wrong for $4.99, but just like the regular $9.99 Jansjos they're only available in-store...

That thing is $245, and what if you need three lights? Three of these Jansjo USB's are only $15.

You asked what people use. That is what I use. It works for me.

I am still not a fan of the LED images, some just look to unnatural.

They are OK if you diffuse them enough. Straight LED's w/o diffusion are too pinpoint and create those "sparklies" that folks complain about. It's made worse by over-sharpening.

I've recently been looking at the sparklies from the perspective of how big my aperture is. The bigger the aperture, the worse the sparklies.

Put a lot of light on the coin. Flood it. Faster shutter speed improves sharpness.

I prefer PAR30 halogen but lots will work. Fluorescent should be avoided.

The USB Jansjo's are $5. The double-LED light that phnatacc uses is $245. But it has two lights...

I see a lot of nice images taken with Fluorescents, and some of the pros use them. I don't like them because my setup is very compact and Fluorescents are big. I like the LEDs because they run cool and I find them easy to white balance.
