I have to agree with the other 45's. Not enough luster IMO to grade 50.

I like it as a 50. I think NGC probably 50'd it but PCGS would 45 it as the others said...PCGS wants some luster...which I don't tend to agree with!

Just to be different im gunna guess it gennied for an old clean or something even though i think it is a pretty nice coin overall, well struck, nice even color and no noticeable large marks!

PCGS XF45. This is a delightful 1861-O with a sharp strike and thick, original patina. Jealous.

I'd prefer to see it in a 45 holder, but 50 wouldn't be objectionable. Hopefully this isn't a trick Genuine.

Hell I could see that in an NGC 53-55 holder. I like it as a pcgs/ market 45 or as high as 50 if there is some luster remaining. The biggest gap between NGC and pcgs standards currently is circulated xf-AU classic type and one of the reasons NGC has lost as much market share and respect value wise over the past 5-6 years. Other areas not to trust the holders from ATS to maintain market value on par

I agree, and would just specifically add NGC AU 58 coins of almost any type to that list.

It graded NGC au50 but I'm going to try it again. IMO the coin is a solid 55

In my experience, NGC AU50 often equates to PCGS XF45 for Seated halves. Maybe expect a 45 if it's submitted to our hosts, and you'll be pleased if it comes back 50. Darn nice coin regardless of grade .

Detail wise it is a solid 55 but skin wise it is xf40 ish which is a net 45. Considing the whole highend xf40-au55 amount to a call on the luster and skin on the coin, The acceptable high point wear is about the same for the range.

AU50.....possibly a 53 regardless of where graded. I think PCGS should grade this AU50 and I'm pretty sure NGC would grade it 50 or 53..with 53 being my guess at NGC.
    I'd personally call it a 50.

The kind of coin we all dream of buying for XF45 money. Keep dreaming guys. That was an XF45 back in the 1970's and 1980's.
Even if it doesn't have any real luster left, it has no brainer AU details. If TPG graded XF45, it will still sell for AU50 money.

I've never considered luster to be a requirement for an AU50 grade. There are many coins with a little luster left that shouldn't be called AU because their
surfaces were destroyed along the way. If we market grade those things as AU, then a fully untouched XF45++ coin should be market graded to AU50.
This particular coin will have some luster hidden in the devices, but it may not be enough to sway those who want to see a full peripheral ring of luster.

If it had luster to support that grade, yeah, but no matter how sharp the details are, the lack of luster will hinder anything higher.
