CSNS Show Report
Wednesday... I left home to drive to Schaumburg this AM at dark +. After a couple of hours it started to rain which soon turned into a downpour. It stopped raining after a few hours and the wind really picked up. Next there was road construction, rough roads, road construction and did I mention road construction? I kept pushing on and arrived at my hotel a little before dark. I was exhausted so I turned in early.
Thursday........After a quick run through the hotel breakfast buffet I drove the 5 or so miles to the convention. It was a very cold and windy walk from the parking lot to the convention center. The Schaumburg Convention Center is a beautiful and first rate facility. I quickly got my name tag and entered the bourse. I headed straight to the PCGS booth to turn in a submission. There were about 4 or 5 people in line so I decided to come back later. The first table that I came to was RARCOA. They had an original roll of 40 1886-S $5 Gold pieces all in PCGS 62 and an original roll of 40 1896-S $20 Gold pieces all in PCGS 62. It has been a long time since I have seen original gold coin rolls. I owned a partial roll of 10 1924 Saints a long time ago. I kept on with my systematic search of the bourse for PCGS coins. I found several coins that I took a closer look at but none of them were as nice as I wanted. After several hours I had made my first tour of the floor and purchased nothing. I decided to go upstairs to look at Heritage auction lots. As soon as I had sat down to look at lots the fire alarm went off and an automatic voice message told everyone to leave the building. Heritage personal quickly started putting up the coin boxes and told everyone to leave. We were outside for about 10 minutes until hotel employees gave us the all clear. It was a false alarm. I went back to lot viewing. After that I went back to the PCGS table and turned in my submission. Next I started on my second pass of the floor. My second trip around the floor was no better than my first. For a change of pace I went over to check out the exhibits. There were a large number of exhibits covering many numismatic categories. It was getting late so I decided to go get a bite to eat before heading to the Platinum night auction. The Eric Newman section was first up. There was a lot of action on almost all lots so the auction took awhile. By the time the Platinum session began there was standing room only. You could feel the excitement building in the room for the 1913 Liberty Nickel. The coin opened at $2,200,000 and rather slowly went to $2,700,000 plus the juice. It was hammered down to Jeff Garrett who was sitting one row in front and about 5 feet to my left. He seemed shocked that he had won it for that price. I thought that it would go for over $3,000,000 hammer. I called it a night and headed back to my hotel.
Friday.......I checked the Heritage site this morning and found out that I went 1 for 3 in the currency auction on Thursday night. Hotel buffet again and then off to the convention. There was a large crowd waiting to get in to the bourse today. I started on my third pass of the floor. After a couple of hours I spotted a coin that I had not seen on Thursday. I checked it out closely and after a short negotiation it was mine. I completed my tour of the floor and found nothing else. I next went upstairs to listen to two of the educational presentations. They were very interesting and I learned a few things. I was finished for the day so I headed back to the hotel.
Saturday...... I placed another bid in the Heritage auction before I left the hotel today.I had the Buffet again and then left the hotel around 7:30 AM. The trip home was almost like the trip to Schaumburg except that there was only light rain instead of a flood. I got home around dark. I checked my bids and saw that I had won a coin in the auction.
Although I purchased very little at the show, I had a very nice time playing with coins and talking to friends. I think I got my coin fix for a little while.
