To each his own, suppose it's good for the hobby. IMO MS70 .999 is to risky to hold for long. I have some early business strikes that are ridiculously clean and white housed in a Dansco. I know, just know, they'll come back 69. In my experience, I've had no luck submitting ASE's, despite screening them over n over.

Wondercoin........would you agree that finding toned MS and proof examples graded 68 and
higher are difficult to find in almost any year?
Along with toned MS, PR 69 are rare?

I have found this to be true, wondering what you have seen?

Again, this begs the question as to what a real modern rarity is worth-

And to be fair about the scope of the question, we should at a minimum go back to 1965-if not 1945- using the end of the Mercury Dime as a beginning just for our discussion for this thread and nothing else... please...

Is that a milk spot by the second "L" in "DOLLAR" on the reverse? If so, I wonder if the bidders know that this isn't covered under PCGS's guarantee.
I personally would rather pay an exorbitant premium for the 1995-W PR70 DCAM Silver Eagle than this coin; at least that coin has claims to being scarce or semi-scarce. This coin is just a condition rarity; albeit, one that I believed turned in the holder. I think the buyer of this coin and the 95-W are hopelessly buried.

Coinsarefun ... don't take this the wrong way ....

The "problem" with these lovely toned MS and proof specimens is that they EASILY tone so expect thousands and thousands more to hit the market in the years ahead. What do I mean by easily?

I have noticed that when I have a loose silver eagle at the bottom of a box (even a storage box if I was transporting coins and a tube opened up) within a few years, or even sooner, it toned (sometimes very pretty) and much faster than say a Franklin Half or a Roosie dime that also was loose at the bottom of the same box . Ditto for some of the silver Commems.

As PCGS gets more comfortable grading these coins, I would expect more MS67, MS68 and even MS69 grades.

While I enjoy very much the coins I have "created" by accident over the years (and have never sold any of them as I recall), I would have a harder time "paying up" for them unless they were absolute monsters, as a number of your coins are.

I will be interested to see if this happens. With the prices increasing on the toned examples I am not so sure you are right, but hey I have been wrong
many more times than I care to remember

I understand that they tone fast but like other silver coins.....there is toning, then there is toning that brings a premium.
Maybe it is me but I find it ever harder to get toned coins graded above 68. There may be a few rim toners out there, but full on toning will usually get
a MS67......maybe 68.

I guess time will be the only real factor in this.

I have to admit as much as a fan of the ASE's I cannot wrap my mind around the recent prices.

I don't understand this. Does this mean that this is the ONLY ONE 1988 ASE that PCGS has EVER graded MS-70 or is it the OGH where the supposed value comes from?

Well I have an 88 over there in a capsule, but never graded, that, in my opinion, is equal in quality of the newer 12 and 13 70's I buy already slabbed from PCGS. I routinely get slabbed 70's graded by PCGS that have nicks and such. My 88 is much bettter. Surely that coin can't be worth anything special if it were able to be graded at 70.

Yes I know it is impossible to get it graded at a 70 now that someone has spent $20,000 + on that one. He/She could easily hire someone to knock me off for sure. Not to mention the fact that PCGS will probably be extremely thorough grading any such future coin.

I signed up for this forum a long time ago (month or two) and never could find my password. I have a membership at NGC as well as here and have been using PCGS for 85% of all the coins I have been submitting. I have found that my education level must not be to the degree that is appropriate or expected at the NGC forum so today I finally dug out my password for this forum.

I became involved in collecting coins mainly through my initial quest to stack silver and gold. After buying many ASE's, Maple Leafs, and other forms of bullion such as 1, 5, and 10 oz bars I find out about this whole numismatic thing that sparked an interest. I began selling off a large portion of my bullion but kept every slabbed ASE, Australian Series, etc... and I still have a good bit of silver bar bullion that I may dump on the next rise.

Now I study and jump in head first more often than I should (which has tended to rub some the wrong way I think) and try to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can to minimize my losses due to ignorance. I guess you could say that my main focus has still been on bullion series coinage mainly Australian low mint series and ASE's.

I have actually bought from many on this forum from what I can see. Ron over at MCW as well as MCM have got a great portion of my business in the slabbed ASE and Australian Series areas.

I will probably let my NGC membership lapse at the end of it's term as they seem to not really care about the embedded elite telling "people like you" to go to "Coin Talk" ..... so instead I decided I would see what was going on over here.

I do get goofy sometimes but one war and massive amounts of medications, while not an excuse, is certainly a factor. But as long as I stay on my meds I am OK. So coin collecting seemed to be a good choice of a hobby for this disabled vet.

Now you know my story. Probably much more than you or anyone else wished to hear.

I'd feel a lot more comfortable if PCGS graded one of those MS70 in recent times. The ogh sort of suggests they gave that grade out 15 or so years ago when they weren't worth
anywhere near close to $25K. I'd bet I could find a flaw on that coin within 20 seconds with a 5X glass.
