Official WWE HOF Rookies Thread

I thought it would be a great idea to setup a WWE HOF RC set, and I talked to PSA about including it on the registry. Since there are technically no official wrestling RC cards, all we have to do is come up with a checklist and send it in for approval. I've come up with a starting point of "RC" cards that we can debate/edit to finalize the list. This would be a great place to show off some cards too. I look forward to seeing some nice stuff & getting everyone's input

List looks good to me. My only suggestion would be to use 85 and 87 OPC over topps since OPC is more limited. 85 piper and Bret hart for example. Just a suggestion... You intent might be the most mainstream rookie. Also the rock and Goldberg have earlier football cards. Not sure if you would want to use those instead. And lastly there are some Japanese sets from 74 and 76 that contain the first cards of a few of the wrestlers listed. It's a mute point right now since psa doesn't grade them right now. I just got them slabbed by bgs and working with psa right now to get them to grade them.

The 1989 Classic cards are going to be tough. I opened a box a few days ago that said the packs were from 1989. Once I opened them they were 1990 cards.

There is no way to know until you open them as the 1989 packs are the same as the 1990.

I like the market scene limited cards from nz too. They are pretty tough to find. Has anyone ever seen series 3 from 89 though? All the ones I've seen say 199" on the back

I tried to start the list with cards that would be somewhat mainstream, because I know some of the sets are nearly impossible to find. I'd be leaning more to keeping the '85 topps over the OPC where certain wrestlers have cards in both sets, but I could see changing the '87 Bret Hart to the OPC since he's from Canada & it would probably be his most desirable RC card. I also figured that the Rock & Goldberg RCs should be wrestling cards & those football cards would be considered XRCs to me, but this list isn't meant to be mine. I just came up with a starting point & would like to hear what everyone else thinks. I will put your suggestions up next to the cards that I have already listed & we can eventually vote on which ones we want in the set. I'm hoping there are more collectors out there that would be interested in this set and can provide some input.

Let us know how you make out grading those Japanese cards

Are you going to the wrestling annual cards only if they do not have a traditional wrestling card that is a rookie? I know that the value of the All Stars is higher than all other wrestling issues but let's just say in regards to Jay Strongbow. We would be going with his 1982 Wrestling All Star over his 1973 Wrestling Annual Card.

  • My thought was to try to stick with actual "cards" for the RCs. I couldn't find a card for The Sheik, so that's why I had the annual card in there. I also couldn't find a card for Vince McMahon Jr, so I used the LGN Figure card back as an alternative.

Any idea on what to use for tag teams/stables (Blackjacks, Funks, Valiant Brothers, Von Erichs)?

I just received an email from psa that they will grade the 1974 yamakatsu cards. I think this is Andre the giants true rookie. It's his first actual card and its produced by a major manufacturer. I will be subbing them soon so hopefully the will appear in the pop report within a month.

Here is what I would consider RCs from the 1974 and 1976 Yamakatsu sets:

Abdullah the Butcher - 1976 Yamakatsu AJPW, #36
    Andre the Giant - 1974 Yamakatsu NJPW, #25 & 29
Antonio Inoki - 1974 Yamakatsu NJPW, various #s
    Dory Funk Jr - 1976 Yamakatsu AJPW, #7, #18, #30, #38
    Terry Funk - 1976 Yamakatsu AJPW, #14 & #31
    Harley Race - 1976 Yamakatsu AJPW, #21 & #40
    Mil Mascaras - 1976 Yamakatsu AJPW, #8, #19, #20 & #24
    Jack Brisco - 1976 Yamakatsu AJPW, #13, #32 & #35
    The Shiek - 1976 Yamakatsu AJPW, #28
    Pedro Morales - 1976 Yamakatsu AJPW, #26

For some reason, the AJPW set is extremely hard to find, but the NJPW sent is much easier to locate.

It is interesting with the Andre but I sort of see his Yamakatsu as an XRC and his 1982 Wrestling All Star as a RC.

I would tend to agree, but Andre also has cards in the 1978 Amada Kings of the Square Ring set too. Yamakatsu and Amada were major manufacturers in Japan and produced probably several thousand of each set if not more.

Has this set gone live yet? As a rookie card collector I would rather have the 74 yamakatsu card for a few reasons. The first is that it was produced so much earlier than the 82 card. 2nd is that although its difficult to find its still produced by a major manufacturer. Yamakatsu produced Star Wars, baseball and many other non sport cards. 3 its an actual card that was pack issued, numbered, in color on decent card stock. If it were one if the 4 major sports I would tend to agree its an xrc but when dealing with the other sports many times you have to look to foreign issues. There is no doubt that the 82 set is the most popular mainstream set but I don't think it's the only set to consider rookie cards from.. Finally I think they look pretty darn cool in slabs. I kept the lower grade one for myself.. So these are no longer mine but this is how they look slabbed

Gone live? Hadn't heard that term before. Someday I plan on sending in my set to get slabbed and have PSA add it to the set registry. I would agree that this would be a great candidate for his rookie on all your points. Problem is not enough on the market. They look pretty sweet in the slabs.

There are several wrestling halls of fame. Do you do a different set registry for each hall of fame or a combined one?
  • wrestlingcardkingwrestlingcardking Posts: 4,555 ✭✭✭✭
Good question, I think you can pick one of them or have a set of each of them (overlap I am sure for some wrestlers). They seem to have a different focus, I would like to include some of the real early guys like Frank Gotch to be included in the set. Some of the really old wrestlers never had a card though.
