Not a toned coin everyone could love.

I pulled the trigger on this because of the kaleidscope sequence of colors.

1887 Obverse is all white.

John Strategies always has great coins. I saw that one too the other day, it's too bad his photos (like most sellers) are usually juiced and I had to return a coin once from him doing that, otherwise, his selection of wild toners is second to none.

I love the pattern, but I thought the colors were a little too tweaked in the image to trust them completely.

I'll admit, I have been scared off from a purchase before due to his images clearly looking "pumped" up on the saturation. So you guys think overall the coins hold up though (if understanding it won't be that vibrant in hand)?

Mine didn't. The colors were heavily "pumped" in the photo and in hand it was lacking the bright colors on display in the photos. I hope the OP doesn't share a similar experience. Maybe he can let us know how it looks in hand when it arrives.

I strongly suspect that he will not be as pleased with the coin inhand as he is with this photo, as another poster pointed out if you look at the colors around the holder this image is very juiced.

I believe no doubt it is juiced. The sellers images hurt my eyes when I see them on Ebay. I also do not need a Morgan as vibrant in this image to call it pretty and "rainbow" toned though. I just wonder if taken down a notch or two in hand, it will hold up as a pretty coin though. Clearly there is toning, just now vibrant is it actually? Also, I have found that often in a juiced photo, what is yellow in the image is really a normal white/cream skinned coin. Pumping up grey or cream color comes out as yellow in the editing. So that is often a clue to me as well. Let alone the holder being colorful.

grip, I don't mean to hijack your thread. I hope the coin is nice in hand and lives up to it's color potential. My whole point is, while juiced, it still could be a nice coin.

You likely bought it for the money Shane should have received for it. Such is the way of eBay. You can't always know when buyers will be competing 'enough' for your coin ...... I like John S. and have had good buys with him. This one for example came from John and in-hand looked like his pic. My pic of it:

But John does tweak his images so I understand when others comment that sometimes the coin doesn't look the same in-hand. I think that some sellers use the same tweaking formula which sometimes results in a more accurate in-hand depiction and sometimes doesn't, depending on the coin.

It's an art and a science, besides a hobby and profession...
Then, it's an industry wide standard. Those who know it, know it. Those who don't keep wondering. I like this hobby more than the business. And I like the coins more than the drama around them. Those committed to foolery who get rich off it (mastering the art of science), will keep fooling those who don't know. (lest these words not be spoken)... And the saga continues.

P.S. Looks fine to me, too... Not that I'm much into toning which looks like this but it looks "good", as it were... and NT.

PS- is it really holdered with the reverse forward, like that?

I don't like that. NGC Ancients did that with my Vespasian "Judaea Capta" denarius. I understood the rationale; it is an important reverse type and all that. But obverse is still obverse and reverse is still reverse. My Roman Twelve Caesars set is a portrait collection, so I wanted all the portraits (obverses) facing forward. I'd feel the same way with a Morgan dollar set. But maybe I'm just too nitpicky about things like that.

I like coins placed reverse side in holders like this. It is the "money" shot afterall.
