Double holder ideas?

Hey guys!

What are your ideas on which coins to use for the dual holder?

I'd love to have one in my collection, but can't figure out which coins would really look good..

I always thought a 3CS and 3CN of the same date in a double holder would be cool... image

I love the idea of seeing a couple of gem proof, cameo three-cent pieces side-by-side in one of those holders! image

I like the idea of a 1880-S MS66 Morgan next to a 1880-S MS66 DMPL Morgan. I have been thinking about doing this since they came out with the double holder.

    Depends on your collecting style.

Could be 2006 RP SAE and 2011 RP SAE (20th and 25th annv sets) or toned SAEs.
Could be as simple as a reverse/obverse combo of the same series (morgan, franklin, washington, etc).
Could be last year/first year sets (1909 IHC and 1909 Lincoln cent, or 1921 Morgan/1921 Peace dollar, etc).

What I, personally, wouldn't do, is to put coins above a certain budget that I am comfortable with (say, $200+ coins) in these, in case I want to sell. Harder to liquidate potentially if you wanted/needed to. That said, if you want to do it, do it. Some of the self-slabbing sets I did before had 2 or 3 coins in the sets. I enjoyed doing them for folks as gifts. Can do sets that are very meaningful that way.

You could also potentially do a Canadian/American combo (dollar/quarter/gold/etc) if you wanted to bridge the border.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    1809/8 $5 and 1909/8 $20 is one I'm considering as a "100 year anniversary" overdate

I'd like to see mated pairs in the double holders. I have three sets that I could submit...

Die trial & production piece. Like a copper Morgan dollar and then a real one.
A Cal Gold quarter and a $50 slug
    A copper Lincoln & a steel one
A MS and DCAM proof of the same type

any motto/no motto combo would be good, but not quite as creative as some ideas here. personally, i'd love to have an 1838-C and D $5 in similar condition beside each other. that would be something! also, a high relief 07 and a flat relief 07 $20 would be nice. how about any coin with a matching coin that has a rotated die error? finally, an 1854 type 1 and type 2 gold dollar would work.

Ive got a 1958 double holder Washington quarter, by NGC. One is MS67* for near-PL with exceptional luster and the other is PR67* for near cameo. Pretty neat and the coins look very similar! I might post a photo if I get a chance.

I have thought about some pairs in my coin collection, but knowing myself as I do, the likelihood of the pairs staying together long term, and the cost and hassle associated with divorce make it not for me. image

I'll probably do a double holder with a $5 and $10 gold coin of the same date from the Canada gold hoard being released.

If your choices include Modern bullion - there are many Proof/Unc pairs you can come up with

The trick is not to put something you will likely to want to sell soon

I personally contemplating 2 coins that I'm planning to keep for quite a while - 2008 "W" Unc $10 Gold Eagle and Buffalo

Same year transitional pieces, i.e 1857 Coronet Head and Flying Eagle cents together. Or 1873 W/Arrows and 1873 No Arrows Liberty Seated quarters. From the Seated half dimes, a pair of 1837 No Stars - Small Date & Large Date, or a pair of 1838 No Drapery - Small Stars and Large Stars.

    I did two:

High and Low Leaf Wisconsin quarters

Washington and Adams missing edge lettering.

In both these cases, the double holder does not detract from sale price, and may actually enhance value (a tiny bit?).

Another candidate pair would be a rare variety with a non-variety reference coin of much less value so that it would be viewed as a free throw in if you were to sell the double holder.

The problem for me was when the coins are of high value and generally sell at a level where a buyer would buy one but not both. Then the holder seems it would decrease the value of the coins it holds.

I have a 1947-S Philippines MacArthur 50 centavos and 1 Peso Set coming back to me soon in one of these double holders... no where on the form to request this and I forgot to mention it when submitting. I asked for it via a follow up telephone call to customer service so hopefully it gets done image

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

yeah, pairs of different designs with the same date are the obvious choice, maybe not 1913 nickels, but how about 1938? or 1883.

1916 dimes and quarters, 1921 dollars, 1909 cents, you get the idea.

Or as someone said, 3 cent nickels and silvers of the same date. Or silver and gold dollars of the same date.

the other obvious choice would be mated pairs of errors; split planchets, mated off center or double struck coins or brockages, that kind of thing.

Matched endroll toners would be good, especially if one is obverse and the other reverse toned

I have a pair of 1860 proof cents, one certified PR66CAM, and the other certified MS65. In a double holder, it would be impossible to dispute that the two coins were struck from the same dies.

Just ran across this double holder idea. What do you think? Will PCGS only do this if they come together in a softpack, not separately? Would you prefer this presentation or the original softpack presentation?

I have a dozen combinations I would like to use for a two coin holder.
    I would probably combine the two 1892 Proof Quarters ( Ty 1 & Ty 2 ).

Now, a three coin holder opens up many more desired combinations,
however, it's really a matter of storage.

The only two non-proof, non-burnished American Gold Eagles to bear the W mintmark - the 1999 $5 and the 1999 $10.

I sent some 1943 Steel Cents and 1943 War Nickels in for dual holders for a talk on WWII Coin Compositions that I plan on doing later this year. Should be fun.
