Conservation question for a PCGS staff memeber or someone who might know here.

If you have a coin that could benifit from conservation but should not upgrade how does this service work?

I have a PCGS high grade proof quarter that to me is graded correctly but has some cloudy fields and odd toning form storage before being graded.

I seldom check PM's but do check emails often jason@seated.org

  • Good Morning Seateddime,

If submitted for the Restoration Service, your coin(s) will first get evaluated by our experts to see if we can indeed restore it. If our experts can restore it, the grading of the coin goes hand in hand with the restoration service. What this means is once the coin(s) gets restored, it has to get graded again as well. For Regrades, if the grade remains the same, so be it, but it also has the possibility of upgrading. For more information on the Restoration Service, you should take a look here: PCGS Restoration.

Said another way, if the coin is conserved you will pay a fee equal to 4% of the value of the coin whether it stays at the same grade or goes up. You will also pay a fee to have it graded, along with the usual shipping, insurance and handling fees.

If the coin goes down in value the PCGS guarantee kicks in and the usual buy-back/pay-out arrangement. I'm not sure but I don't think there is a 4% conservation fee for a downgrade.

This is different from the reconsideration service which has a 1% premium guarantee fee only if the coin upgrades (along with the other usual fees).

A regrade has no % fee based on value regardless of the outcome.

    Ultra rarities are different.

  • Isn't it $25 to find out your coin is not eligible?

If our experts determine that we cannot restore the particular coin, it will indeed be a $25/coin charge.

Corbin, would you confirm there is no 4% fee if the coin downgrades and the PCGS guarantee kicks in?

If you've had an opportunity to look at the Restoration submission forms, it states, "Coins in PCGS holders are guaranteed to not go down in grade." This wording is located in the area where you have to provide your initials.

Yes, I've seen it. Point is, if your coin has to downgrade you are covered by the guarantee.

So again, my question is there is no 4% fee if the coin downgrades, correct?

Sorry to disagree with you, Corbin. You had better talk with DW.

"Guaranteed not to go down" means if the coin doesn't merit its current grade the owner is covered by PCGS's guarantee.

PCGS will not reholder the coin in its current grade if it doesn't deserve it.
    Lance.

  • << <i>Lance,

As mentioned in my previous comment... For PCGS graded coins submitted through the Restoration Service, they are GUARANTEED to NOT go down in grade. Thus, your scenario about PCGS holdered coins downgrading is something that can't happen.

    My Best Regards,

    Hi Corbin,

I must be reading incorrectly. How can a coin be guaranteed not to downgrade before the work is done? What if the coin is a lesser grade after the Restoration? That is impossible?

    Best wishes,
    Eric

That is my mistake. Thank you to those who continuously asked questions regarding this policy. The Guaranty Resubmission still applies to the PCGS graded coins submitted through the Restoration service. You are indeed correct that there is no 4% fee if the coin indeed downgrades.

Not much of a "restoration" if the grade goes down, huh?
