My tenth purchase for the new 19th century VF-XF Basic Type Set.
(Edit- OK, no- I've gone with a different coin for the #10 purchase, which I'll post later. Let the poll on this one proceed, though.)

My recent spending spree is slowing considerably, but I was able to swing this purchase with a sharks's tooth!
I offered the fossil tooth as a sort of off-the-wall trade. The seller of this coin (on BST) declined, but I knew it might not be his cuppa tea.
So I offered the fossil to another forum friend for exactly the price I needed to buy this coin, and he accepted!
Presto- I just exchanged a shark's tooth for this coin. I live at the source for these fossils so I find them myself or buy them wholesale from the other finders. I don't recall what I paid for the tooth (a friend found it near where I live), but I am sure it was well below a hundred bucks.
Oh, and hey- check out how nicely it matches my NM Seated dollar!

Edit to add: Nice coin regardless and a worthy addition.
RIP Mom- 1932-2012
It's still acceptable in my book.

<< <i>EF40 details, but marks on eagle's wing were probably smoothed or tooled to lessen their appearance. You might want to return this one quickly, if possible, because it's a very common date with problems that will prevent grading. Will be very tough to sell when the time comes. Take it from someone who collects Seated halves avidly.
I am the seller of the coin, and there is no need to "return it quickly if you can" as I still have the coin in front of me. Rob is welcome to opt for me to keep the coin, that's up to him...No sense in him buying a coin he doesn't like.
That aside, I went ahead and shot some close ups of the wing to either rule out, or agree that the marks were smoothed. In my opinion they haven't been smoothed, and they have been there on the coin for quite some time. Without further Ado, here is the photo :

Kudos for posting this, USMoneylover, and being willing to do the right thing, regardless of the outcome - this is why I love dealing with forum members
They don't look like they've been smoothed to me. Just some old scrapes that have toned over.
I think I could probably live with 'em, considering the price I have invested, but then again, that's one reason I like to do these polls. Bouncing 'em off all of you is sorta like a report card- I get to see in advance, long before I ever resell the coins, where I might have done well and where I might have done not so well.
'Tis a learning experience for me, and if somebody else picks up a thing or two from the comments on these polls, then great.
Hey, USMoneylover- I'll tell you what- I'll have another look at your website to see if there is something else I like instead, since this deal is not 100% completed yet. (I was still waiting for the funds from the shark tooth sale before I PayPal-ed you this evening, as that other person is at his day job.)
I saw some other "crusty" stuff on your site I liked the look of. I hereby pledge to spend at least the same amount of money as I would have for this coin.
So maybe I got "blinded by the crustiness" a bit on this one, but I still think it's a handsome coin, scrapes or no scrapes.
And though these polls have been an education for me, I still reckon I can think for myself, too. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

<< <i>PVC, scratches, no grade.

USMoneylover not only agreed to this, but offered it. Very gracious.
Of course I've now agreed to buy a different half dollar from him- and another coin besides- so he ends up getting more than twice as much from me when it's all said and done. But those look like nice coins, too, and of course I'll do my traditional polls for them shortly, unless anybody's getting tired of this.
I for one like this whole poll thing, for the obvious reason that it's going to save me from some of my own mistakes in the long run.
Which is a bit humbling, sometimes. However, like I've said before, I'm capable of thinking for myself... but having added opinions never hurts!
Thanks, all.

For my and perhaps others education, where is the evidence of PVC?

Hi,
One spot easily visible is the green bit inside the damage - middle of the large photo, second scratch from wing tip bottom (the scratches parallel with the arrows). There are perhaps more subtle spots in the area in the fields. I DOT NOT SAY HERE, but if a coin doc were "smart" he would place such a small thing (or like "indicator") in just small a spot to imply originality.
Big on this coin? No, but with the other two bits of PVC, the gauge into the shield, the other scratches some of which extend into the arrows, it just seems a less than desirable coin.

Edit to add, I voted 30. The coin is just fine. It's not going into a slab, it'll most likely go into an album andl look sweet along side others with the same crusty look !

Why would you think I was speaking of a coin at this level necessarily?
Eric
Kudos USML.
