Grading question Link added with pics

Lets say you have a coin graded by any of the other grading services listed above other than PCGS. How often do you get the same grade from PCGS?
I know this is a general question but I am just curious in what other people have received when they get one back that they have submitted to PCGS.

The reason I am asking is one coin I like is Graded by SEGS a MS65 and I am wondering the chances it will get the same thing from PCGS.
The guy wants $550 for the coin. It is worth about $1,800 on PCGS price guide in MS65 and $750 in MS64.

Anybody have any luck on getting coins crossedover to PCGS?

To me it is very specific to the actual coin. I have seen coins in other companies holders come back multiple grades lower, and some that have come back multiple points higher. The coin itself is really the key.

I can tell you that in my experience, I have seen pieces from certain companies that get into a genuine PCGS holder and rightfully so. Others pieces have crossed no problem.

Depends on the coin, really. I don't really think too highly of SEGS (I don't know how many here to, either) but that doesn't mean, theoretically, that SEGS can't get it right at least once. If it's an MS65 coin by PCGS standards, it can still go in an SEGS MS65 holder.

Point is: show us a pic of the coin

Also, grading standards are a function of time... so answers will vary based on the time of grading.

more than likely it is 61/62/63 OR it is a coin with UNC details but has a problem(s)

Seems to me if it could get in a PCGS holder at 64 or 65, it would already be there. No doubt the guy has at least shopped it around for opinions.

You can't put a number to the chance of crossovers; it's not some blind-luck test that some muster and some don't, otherwise all coins will eventually cross at the grade you wish.

Aside for the "depends on the coin," if one had to generalize, which is your question, I would pay 62/63 pcgs money for a 65 segs coin.

Here some advise posted here before. I think it's sage advise. If you want a coin in PCGS plastic, buy it in PCGS plastic.

I've found lots of coins in non-PCGS holders that get upgraded when cracked out and submitted raw to PCGS. There are lots of conservatively graded coins in other holders.

However, there are lots of landmines out there as well.

Bottom line, you have to be a decent grader yourself to play this game and not get eaten alive.

There's a ready-made solution for most people, though. Buy the coin that's already in the holder you want, at the grade you want.

obviously, i can't say for sure if the coin will cross...but, given the information you gave about the coin:

it's $550 in the segs holder. at the same grade, in pcgs plastic it's $1800. why doesn't the dealer cross it and double his money? that might be a clue about the potential of getting it to cross at that grade.

as time goes on, i have had better luck at getting things to cross. but, i have learned that it takes a lot of looking at coins to figure it out more so than what the holder is/says. the more you look at a certain range of pcgs graded coins...say morgans in ms60 to ms65 for example...the more you know what to look for. i don't believe there is any bias when crossing coins. if the coin looks like what they think is a 65, they will cross it. there are always exceptions to the rule, but generally, i believe this is the case.

Well, it could be a great deal, and the current seller may be leaving a lot of money on the table. But that is not the way to bet.

I always crack mine out and send them in raw. I have had great success this way -- obviously if
I miss something or the holder was hiding a problem, all bets are off.

Better advice: Learn to grade, specialize in a series, examine coins in hand and get it into PCGS plastic yourself. Knowledge and patience are prerequisite.

Do you figure you know more than the seller? Seriously.

SEGS is not one of the more respected TPG's. You could get lucky but the odds are pretty long. Count on paying tuition.

The risk is the color/surfaces.
I'd worry that it comes back with a problem, maybe recolored?

If it was a slam dunk it would probably already be in a PCGS or NGC slab.
