What caused this 1853 dime to not holder?

It's got pretty good luster - can even cartwheel it. Is the coin just too bright from an old dip? After it has more time to retone, do you think it'd be market acceptable?

To be fair, i did buy this as an AU details coin, but got a good price and liked the toning on it. I tried one submission just to see what would happen, and of course it came back AU details.

What was the code? Maybe filled rims or altered surfaces. Did you check holder if genuine even if ungradable? I don't think a dip and retone would cause a no grade. Looks decent.

The rims make me think ex-jewelry.

The obverse has a cleaned look, but that could be nothing more than imaging. If you have
received a problem grade twice (same service, or 2 different services?) I think the chances
are strong that something is amiss.

Interesting on the jewelry angle. Hadn't really noticed that yet... I'll have to take a better look under loupe.

It did come back from NGC as: 006 1853 ARROWS 10C IMPROPERLY CLEANED

Only submitted once.. I was curious though what about it makes it appear cleaned. I dont really see hairlines, and it has decent luster.

    Thanks

It has been whizzed, perhaps. The shine on the coin does not appear original.

cleaning could also mean inappropriate dipping
such as dipping a circulated coin to make it look un-natural
    then it retones

I don't see evidence of cleaning or whizzing at all.

As far as dipping goes, it shouldn't even be an issue because most coins are dipped.

It could be the jewelry aspect though, but wouldn't the 'details' explanation be different then?

That double ring around the edge front and back makes me think ex jewelry also.

Set it on the window sil of your bathroom that has a shower for a year or two. That might fix it in regards to the cleaning?

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.
