While we are having a good time spending AnkurJ's money, I'd suggest that a few California fractional gold coins to represent the gold rush era would be neat. Many people don't like them because they are so small but that is part of their charm (pun intended). Get a good loupe and they will look huge. >>

    That's exactly why I don't like them! image >>

I must agree with Ankur on this (and only this) point. imageimage

<< <i>Wow, very nice coins and images. Thanks for sharing.
Much nicer to look at than the small black and white images in my old redbook!

    Are you considering going for a 1796 $5 or $10? >>

Do you mean 1795? Maybe down the line. Right now their out of my price range in problem free condition. >>

1796 $5/$10 also have the small eagle design, and if you're feeling very adventurous, 1797 does as well (and 1798 for $5s). There has been a bit of a pull back on price for these recently so the time may be coming for you to dive in.

Is there a significant price difference between 1795 and 1796?

Sweet... But do you keep the non CAC examples in a separate box so they don't get teased or bullied imageimageimage

    << <i>Is there a significant price difference between 1795 and 1796? >>

Yes, 1796/5 $5s do have a premium (every example is an overdate) and are considerably more rare than 1795 $5s. Originality does produce a premium and a lot of these have been messed with.

1796 $10s are considerably more rare than 1795 $10s but hold a relatively small premium. The price of 1795 $10s is raised up because of the "first year of issue" factor but the rarity difference is worth the small price jump in my eyes. If you do end up being interested in them, be mindful of the die crack that usually starts on 1796 $10s - they used just a single die pairing for the issue and it ended up making a dramatic vertical die crack right across the obverse which, while I think it's interesting (I love die cracks), usually holds back the price a bit as it is distracting.

1797 Small Eagle $5s and $10s are all extremely rare and command a sizable premium. 1797 Small Eagle $10s recently had a major run up in price so you'd probably be better off with a 1795 or 1796 if you're looking for a type coin, but the 1797 $10 was my favorite coin when I was building my set. They tried to add an extra star because of Tennessee entering the union, resulting in twelve stars on the left and four on the right, likely reducing the life span of the die and producing the crack which shows on the obverse below the sixteenth star.

It will be a while before I can consider one of those.

Oops, yes. That looked like the affordable date, as SmEagle1795 has elaborated.
Apparently the print in my redbook is too small for me to read the date correctly, yikes!
(Good thing I'm not rushing out to buy one...)

Definitely tough on the budget. Maybe feasible someday, though.

<< <i>Nice set, but needs some more coins. I would add a Dahlonega and Charlotte gold coin and Type I and II $20's, as well as a NM $10 as PH suggested. You are far from finished. image >>

He should also consider getting a Type 3 $1, no motto Saint, a no motto Lib $10, and a no motto Liberty $5. Also, the seven piece Liberty $5 from all seven major US mints is also a neat set. >>

AnkurJ---Congratulations. You have just completed the traditional 12 piece gold type set. Adding the no motto types is just icing on the cake.

Couldn't agree more. There is something about a great [gold] set ... a kind of regalia, like I can feel the weight of a government's historical significance.

I don't know if that makes any sense but I've bookmarked this thread for future viewing pleasure. Please preserve the image URLs! It really is a gorgeous set.

Impressive set with cherry coins. image RYK is drooling more than many others. I remember when you posted about buying the the '99 $10.

BTW 1797 QE's all are struck with a dramatic die crack (long and thick) in right obverse field. Never ever saw an auction description that failed to call it "interesting". image
