USPS to stop delivering mail on Saturday

This is bad news for many of us.

They say packages will be delivered but what about flats?

I expect more to come.

I sure don/t want my packages left in the post office over the weekend as that is just asking for trouble.

I may have to change to a p o box for my mail delivery and also change when I ship coins out to avoid weekends

Been talked about for over a year. They are paying delivery people for eight hours on Saturday and only have three hours of work for them.

The agency reported an annual loss of a record $15.9 billion for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, triple the prior year's loss and capping a year in which it was forced to default on payments to a health benefit trust fund managed by the Treasury Department. The rising costs for future retiree health benefits accounted for $11.1 billion of the losses.

And half of it likely goes into the pockets of the executives who don't take cuts in pay and benefits and vote themselves raises every year. The amount of money we tax payers are ripped off would not only wipe out our deficit but could have found a cure for cancer and a number of other diseases. I see these people burning in he!! And if I end up there, I'm going to help them with most of my charcoal! image

Correct, the only thing stopping is residential mail delivery. PO Boxes will still receive mail, counters will still be open, and packages will still get delivered.

Ten years ago that might have been a bad thing. Nowadays the only thing that moves through residential mail seems to be junk mail, with the occasional account statement here and there that can be retrieved online anyway.

The real issue, is that it's a slippery slope. Soon they will want to stop all post office functions on Saturday. Then they will want to move to Monday Wednesday and Friday only. Then they will want to do the same for packages. And on and on.

If you have a P.O. box they will put your package in a locker in the lobby and the locker key in your mailbox. If you want more security over that use registered; at least it will be kept under lock and key.

I agree with all of the above. Saturday mail is 100% junk in my world. M-F is about 90% junk. I wish all of my statements, invites, bills, etc. would come through my email.

First in a long line of other things the PO will stop in the near future. I can see all Saturday employees taking that day off, and not by their own admission.

I'm with you on that RYK, I guess I should worry because it would be more money out of our pockets at the inopportune times. Because of this change, my alternative to a Saturday delivery is to go to Fedex and pay them $50 or more for an envelope delivery on a Saturday.

Actually the PO wants to step up its package delivery to compete with UPS and FEDEX.
I recall reading their package delivery picked up by roughly 15% last year.

You're correct, that's were the PO excels at, the cheaper services for flat rate parcels and express shipping. It's just when you need to send documents for weekend delivery is where that competitive advantage no longer exists because of the change. If anything, this should increase the PO's parcel drop off on Saturday a tad bit more. It's in the delivery of envelopes and junk mail where they lose a ton of money.

Bad news for those with manic personalities and the impatient but in the grand scheme of things it's probably better for the USPS to cut Saturday mail delivery.

I live in an extremely rural area and I am within a 15 minute drive of 15-20 post offices, that's why they lose money. It requires an act of God to close one and actually people have been screaming for years to get them to open more (not here, thankfully) in places like FL and NV. There's an INCREDIBLE amount of politics in everything they're allowed or not allowed to do.

I used to think USPS execs were highly paid, until I found out what Fannie Mae execs make. They nearly destroyed the economy and they have 400 execs who make over $350k.image

I do not believe that for 1 second.

The USPS is a hard working group of folks that needs congressional approval before they raise rates. Unlike the competition which can raise their rates as their business needs dictate, the USPS has to prove a loss before being allowed to raise rates. When they do raise postage a penny or two, folks scream to high heaven!

Of course, folks could always use alternative carriers but they don;t since those business charge better than $10 "per piece" for delivery AND they don;t deliver on Saturdays.

So much whining and complaining over what folks figure is their entitlement. Whine if a package is a day late. Whine if the clerk questions you. Whine because the lines are too long. Whine because postage goes up a penny and then whine whine whine whine.

The USPS should increase their bulk mailing charges to cut down on the amount of junk mail that gets delivered. They should then charge a flat $1.00 for 1st Class letters and .75 for postcards. (Does anybody even send postcards anymore?) They should then charge "cost" for all the free packaging they supply folks with (who then use it for other things such as packaging).

The only problem is..............Congress and their incessant need to get re-elected! Come to think of it, thats about the only thing they manage to get done right.

The United States Post Office has not directly received tax payer dollars since the early 80's when they became an independent agency of the US Government.

Or do I have my facts wrong?

I found this to be an odd statement.

What does "The amount of money we tax payers are ripped off ..." have to do with the Post Office ????

I mean tax payers are ripped of, but NOT by the Post Office, because NO Tax payer money goes to the Post Office.

If there is any issue with the Post Office, it's that Congress actually Restricts the Post Office from doing other things.

So if anything, Congress needs to get out of the Post Office business and let them operate.

Technically the USPS is now taxpayer supported...the only reason they are open today is because they were allowed to default on Treasury loans in 2012 and will again in 2013. Somebody has to come up with a bunch of money to keep them open, and stopping Saturday is only $2B. I believe the date they went independent was actually in the 70's and they did not take a dime in taxes until 2012. FYI, one of their loss categories is that they are required to provide free postage to all incumbent federal politicians.

Edit: Also magazines are still subsidized under rules put in effect by Ben Franklin, to help his printing operation. Go Ben. image

A little trick to help stem your personal flow of "junk" mail is this; anytime a letter such as a credit card application comes to you with a return envelope (postage paid), tear off anything with your name and address on it, insert into the return envelope and mail it. In the end this practice costs the businesses more $$$ in wages (which I'm sure pi$$e$ them off no end) than it takes to initially mass mail them. Soon your name is removed from the mailing list.

If you remove any portion of a mass mailing with your personal info before sending it back, how the hell do you figure that the bulk mailer is going to know who is engaging in this practice, which you claim will cause them to drop you from their mailing list? imageimage
