Numismatic Adjectives... Show me your salesmanship.

2ltdjorn2ltdjorn Posts: 2,331 ✭✭✭✭
While I am sure this has been discussed before...

In terms of description of a coin... is stating "rare" coin redundant? I mean really who buys "extremely common" coins? (except me, I focus my collecting habits on Dreck... well nice dreck I suppose?)

What other adjectives do you find humorous in the description of a coin that is offered for sale?

Sexy might be applied to some of those large busted ladies of the 18th & 19th century.

A certain someone revered here often described coins as "creamy", as in "the obverse is sharp, yet creamy".

So in the parade did each ref get his own car or did they all have to share one with Chris Culliver?

Here's a page from the old Out On A Limb. I think many catalogers have this required as mandatory in their library. image

    LOL, Nice!

I often use: Common Coin, Common Grade, Uncommon Color!
I actively collect, buy and sell US minted Philippine coins from 1903-1945. I am interested in anything during this period, Albums, Proof sets, collections, original rolls and bags, Cullion Leper colony coins etc.
Also a big fan of liberty seated coins.

My favorite was a coin with very suspicious color catalogued as having "artistic toning." It was either SB or Heritage, and I think they deleted the entry from the archive because I spent a lot of time looking for it and could not find it.

Thx for sharing the Money Tree page. If Ken Lowe were still alive, he would have been addicted to the Forum, and probably would have been the funniest author here. Wish I could have met him......

I have added the Num Phrase tool to my library - love it.

Dont know if these are on it but been fed these descriptions:

"Original charcoal grey toning" = looks like its been runover by a truck

"nice original patina" = beware of spots, pvc damage

Many coins are described as "key date" when they are not.

Now that you have dozens of people looking at your next big thing, you're going to have to worry about the "stiff" competition. Can you imagine 50% of all the auctions having "throbbing luster" in the title?

"Top 5% of grade." (or any other percentage for that matter).

This becomes particularly inaccurate when there are less than 20 specimens of the coin currently graded. For instance, with only 14 coins graded in a particular grade, only 1 can be in the top 7-8%. And even to make such a claim, you would have to have seen all 14 specimens within about the same time frame. And even that best of 14 coin cannot be in the top 5%. image

One that caught my eye the other day was " Smooth Cheek " referring to a Morgan Dollar.

Another that I like and makes me look at the auction is, " Bright White ".
I Love a bright white coin all most as much a nicely toned one.
