When you can't view a coin in person for purchase...

...it pays to have someone you trust view the coin for you.

I was looking at the images online in a recent auction. Even though I really needed a 1937 proof quarter in Pr 65 in an old rattler holder for my set I thought I would pass on this one and wait for a better example (if one was to be found). I had a friend view the coin for me and he told me not to be afraid to place a bid. image

This is what the coin looked like in the images online.

This is what the coin looks like after Mark imaged it.

Until I compared the numbers on the slabs I thought I had received the wrong coin. image

Anyone else got examples of the coin exceeding expectations?

Mike

Now here is an example where the image looked MUCH better than the actual coin.

    Nice toning, not many scratches.

Congrats on your purchase and was that coin in the recent Fun Show? I have seen that picture and I picked up 2 of the proofs from the Fun show and traced one coin back to a teletrade picture of 2004 and than again in 2011 from Heritage and like you had to compare the numbers as I thought no way at first. I get my 2 tomorrow and look forward to seeing them in hand, and your right with pictures its best to see in hand or have someone look for you. Enjoy image

I recently took a shot at one on eBay and ended up being pleasantly surprised at the result.

Wow. This should be made a sticky thread and required reading for anyone buying coins online.

This 37 Washie was in the Heritage Auction at FUN. My buddy that checked out the coin for me just told me to bid and that I would pleasantly surprised if I won the auction. No kidding. image

I just couldn't figure out from the images how this coin was graded Pr65 by PCGS and awarded a Gold sticker by CAC.

I learned my lesson the hard way not bid on a coin that I haven't seen in person or at least had someone look at the coin for me.

Sometimes the photos on PCGS.com > Cert Verification can be helpful. Especially if the seller has posted a moon shot of the slab, or if it's a junk drawer lot and no closeup shot of the slab. I enter the cert # and pull up the registry images.

Well if those are the images that showed on it I bet the consignor was not happy with the end result of the auction.

True; for every such transaction, there's a "winner" and a "loser."

In both cases of yours I don't see there being very much a difference between the images -- in other words, nope, no surprises.
