    I read the article, but it did not mention any singular attribute of this particular piece that made it so expensive. Does anyone know why it went this high?

    "Bo" was one of the original (and probably the most famous) hobo carvers. Lots of early hobo nickels were really just people trying to emulate his work. I'm assuming the pedigree that this was one of his originals drove up the price, but $24K is amazing.

    Is there a folk art market for hobo nickels? Even if there is, the price realized seems very high for such a small art object.

    I can understand why any hobo nickel that has some easy way to authenticate it to
    an artist from the early days will go for big bucks. Bo is probably the best known.
    To see what I mean is.. go on ebay and try to make heads or tails of what is what
    if you are looking for an early piece to a known artist or at the very least one that
    could be from a known artist. Many pit falls...

    So one can just pay up for a piece that the community all agrees is legit.
    I agree with 291fifth though. That nickel is so small it does not present very well
    to have on display. You sorta squirrel it away to show others who care.

    I think it is great that this wonderful original hobo nickel brought such amazing money. Price-wise, such an auction price usually means that an underbidder was unsuccessful, so I am not worried for the buyer.

    I had the priviledge of being at a table at the Michigan State show last Thanksgiving, immediately next to the individual who purchased the record-breaking Hobo nickel. Chris really knows his stuff, and has an amazing collection of his own that he showed me. I asked him many questions; he was patient with me and obviously is very knowledgeable. He had a steady stream of other Hobo nickel enthusiasts coming by and sharing their stories and showing off their coins. He is active in the Original Hobo Nickel Society and loves what he collects. I am glad he was able to get this nickel.
