Your Item's Status
Your item was processed through our ZIP Code 12312 facility on January 19, 2013 at 12:45 am. Information, if available, is updated periodically throughout the day. Please check again later.

Sent a coin to a forum member via registered mail. Due to an error on my part he decided he did not want the coin. I suggested he refuse the package and it would come back to me postage due. Since I'm expecting the coin back tomorrow or Wednesday, I ran the tracking number and got the above message. The zp code 13213 does not exist on the USPS site. Anyone know what it means?

Under details I get the following: Read from bottom to top.

Probably behind the seat of your mailman's vehicle.
Their tracking system goes bonkers when a return is thrown at it.

Best to avoid clients refusing packages. The controls are not the same and while most of them turn up, I think the chances for a loss is increased.

Registered mail should be handled the same way in both directions, no?

*should be*, but going by your thread (and what I've experienced), the tracking is not the same. Even when you sign for it back it's not the same system.

The correct number 12312 is not a valid zip code number when entered into the find a location search box. I'll ask at the PO tomorrow and see/hear what they say.

I've sent lots of registered and tracked a ton of them first time I've ever seen 12312. Must be outer space or a black hole.

I would expect zip code 12312 to be in the Schenectady / Albany, New york area. Does this make any sense to you BF ?

No, since the item went thru KC then to Georgia and back through KC. I expect it is in Des Moines or will be tomorrow.

I had a package ship from CAC a couple days before Hurricane Sandy was supposed to hit. About the time I thought it shud be here, it went to a zip code in NYC.

the number sequence and the fact that USPS did not precede it with a city and state tells me that USPS uses it as a code for something that is not a zip code location, maybe just for status.

maybe an internal code for "homland security notified." image

it will show up, but it will take a while!!

had one a few years ago. Not refused, but I had to stop a registered that was hitting the post office at the destination about the same time the customers check bounced. (I recalled it)

it took like 2 weeks to return, tracking was off, but did make it back, box was beat all to he11

Possible. I'll post here later what I find out in case others ever run up against it.

I spose, but why is the KC sorting facility specifically identified and not this one?

The person I talked to at the P.O. had no idea, but the item is supposed to arrive back any minute now.

The one good thing about it is that there is no charge to have the item refused and sent back. Had I had the other person accept it and return it, I would be out another shipping charge. I don't think there is much risk using registered.
