Hey everyone. Bought this yesterday from the local pawn shop for a nice bargain. As I understood it, these coins really only go for bullion value... but lately I've seen a number of brilliantly uncirculated Silver Eagles sell with a nice premium. Anyway, this one caught my eye as I struggled to find any scratches/dings, and I really liked the toning on the top.

I kinda wish the entire coin was toned, with some impressive color scheme going on. Can I only do this artificially? Could I keep the coin in an environment where it's likely to be toned on its own? How could one tell artificial toning for the real deal?

Also, does the condition (BU) of this coin raise its premium? Is it worth sending in to be graded?

Not worth sending it in. The toning on the reverse is terminal. I would sell it and seek something else.

Eagles are not circulated, tens of thousands of them exist in MS69 and MS70 grades. No premium unless it's a 70.

And, the very least this could be worth is bullion, right?

yes it will always be worth its weight in silver..........

Terminal refers to the color of the toning, the last stage of toning is black.

Eagles usually sell for spot plus 2-3 dollars. Terminal toning means black toning. It's the last color silver turns before going into environmental damage.

Ah ok, sounds good. I paid well under spot for it, so I think I'll keep it for now, in the event that silver prices increase significantly. What are some things I can do to artificially tone it? Put it on a felt-like cloth? Plastic bag?

I would put the ASE into an album. Grading fees are not worth it as this bullion coin does not carry much of a premium.
The toning appears natural however not particularly nice toning.

I'm not sure what the other member meant by terminal as this coin does not have anything terminal going on toning or anything wise

Not sure what you meant by the only way to obtain a premium would be to artificially tone the coin as it would not grade other than genuine.

As far as premiums go for toned ASE's they start anywhere from $100-150 up to $800
But they need to have a nice higher grade and beautifully toned.
