"tube" of mintmarks.

A really old (75+) coin collector was telling me at one time they used to sell little vials of mint marks. You could solder them onto coins and make your own "32-d quarter" or a "16-d dime".

Has anyone heard of such a thing?

i don't recall anyone ever talking about vials of mm being sold, but i have for sure heard of mm being glued, soldered, etc etc onto other coins and some dealers told me (that had strong fingernails) they used to be able to "pop" off mintmarks from coins they thought were suspect

  • I also forgot to add, he said they were sold during the 50s and early 60s, before the hobby protection act. They were a "novelty" item.

  • Although I have not heard of them sold by the tube, I have heard of added mint marks that have fallen off during an acetone rinse to remove the 'crud' from a coin. Likely the crud was added to hide the evidence of th altered mint mark.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I heard of such a thing and just assumed it was a myth. I always thought that they would just shave a real mintmark off a common date coin. There was an incidence with a 1916-D dime in a third world slab where the mintmark came off the coin and was rattling around the inside of the slab.

In the book "STANDARD CATALOG OF COUNTERFEIT AND ALTERED UNITED STATES COINS" 1979 by Virgil Hanc ock & Larry Spanbauer, there are several pages discussing manufactured mintmarks.

I know that fake mintmarks have been added to coins, but I have never heard of ever being able to buy them openly. I wasn't in the hobby in the 1950's but I have done enough reading to believe I would have read about it at some point if it was being done openly.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
