A few earlier half dollars

While most kids my son's age were asking for Xbox with Call Of Duty Black Ops II for Christmas, my kid asked for a couple three half dollars of some types he always wanted. Picked up some decent examples at the lower mid range (I hope) as we just wanted some respectable examples. Would these grade at 20?? I used the Photograde. Hoping I didn't do too badly

Good stuff, I'm glad your son is a coin kid. I would grade these:

    '29- VF+
    '24- VF+ det. cleaned
    '53- VF

I agree with Wes's grades exactly...with the exception that it is possible that the 24 may be OK, some times pics/ lighting can blow up hairlines somewhat
on coins that are acceptable...at the very least I would say that it's been lightened, and would want to swap it out for one that looks like the others at some point.
    Cool Coins !

Its awesome that your children are interested in coins......that 29 is yummy, to me it is a poster child for Original Surfaces.

edited to add: the 29 looks like O-108, R2 to me
Key identifiers for this die marriage are:

    (1) On the obverse there are die lines between the end of the bust and the edge.

    (2) Top of the 5 is recut. The 5 is higher than the 0 and tipped to the left. The C of 50 C. is also sharply tipped to the left.

  • Hey, thanks for the replies! I know the 24 is prob cleaned, but that's OK. We got all three at very decent prices. Most important thing is he is thrilled to have "such old coins in my collection."

If I see a coin he likes on eBay, I look very hard at the photos. If I detect even the slimmest chance it/they may be cleaned, the appropriate bids are placed. If I lose, so be it. Better safe than eBayed, right? I will always steer clear of the obvious car wax jobs as well as the polished look. HATE the polished look.
