Coin Shop Owner and Robbery Suspect Shot at Independence Coin Shop

Suspected Robber Shot At Independence Store
People who know the owner of an Independence coin shop owner injured during an attempted robbery that also left the suspect severely injured say he is a very well-liked man in the southeast Kansas community.

A cousin of Ken Preble, owner of Uncle Ken's Coin and Jewelry Shop, never expected him to have to deal with anything like Wednesday's incident.

"He's just a real good, mild guy," said Jim Richardson. "Never been in any trouble. Just a super guy."

That's why Richardson was shocked to learn his cousin had ben shot during an attempted robbery.

"We didn't know what to do and then we heard a lot of different stories, you know," Richardson said.

Independence Police Chief Harry Smith said the suspect entered the shop about 10:30 a.m. and pulled a gun. Preble was also able to grab a gun, Smith said, and both men were shot during a struggle.

Smith said the suspect ran from the business and made it about a block before police caught up with him. Both the suspect and Preble were taken to an Independence hospital. The suspect was later flown to a Wichita hospital.

The story says that the "suspect" was shot several times. Good for the show owner.

They must have thought he would not survive the hour and a half ambulance ride to Wichita. Personally, I would have let him take his chances with it.

It sucks being shot at. I was forturnate the 4 times I was shot at in my life. Each missed. However, I can tell you, five sets of boots to the head and body hurt like hell.

Would have been a shame if the suspect hadn't been secured in the helicopter and accidentally fell out. Yup, damn shame.

My father shot and killed an armed robber in his and my Mom's store in '82 - the thug had a gun to my Mother's head.

Very effective way to fight crime. No repeat offender in the case of the thug who held my parents up, nor an expensive trial.

No sir, the shots were four shotguns during the early seventies driving home from a festival. Four young men piled out of a car at an intersection and started blasting. The beating was a home invasion in the 80's... ah, but the memories are fresh as a newborn baby.

Being the victim is no fun.

That is funny, but sadly in today's world with the weasel lawyers twisting the law, the suspect's surviving family would probably own the helicopter company, the hospital, AND the coin shop. I believe I would take a chance at it though. At least drop him over some gator infested area and upon landing say there was a struggle and he opened the door and jumped out.

    This.

Then sue HIS family for being such crappy role models. Why is it so hard to raise a kid not to be a criminal these days?

Glad to hear the injuries were not worse.

Every time I read something like this, it's a reminder that I should never open a coin shop. What a shame.

Mt Hope cemetery across the street from the shop, that is where the "suspect" should have been taken.

Why are taxpayers footing the bill for the medical evac and hospital care for this guy?
One more shot to the head would have been more economical.

And whom should we appoint to perform these executions (all without benefit of a trial, of course)? Ridiculous.

In a just society it is the responsibility of the person whose life is threatened to ensure the perpetrator threatens no more lives. Killing another in self-defense is both legally and morally acceptable in this country.

It would have been good if the coin shop owner, the victim of the robbery, had shot the assailant
in the head. Good for society.

The bad guys have too many rights now(crappy court system). Once someone comes in your shop or home and starts waving a gun......the only good and just ending is a DEAD assailent! PERIOD!!!

ALL states should have the death penalty and enforce it like Texas does. IT STOPS REPEAT OFFENDERS!!!

a friend picked up a nice semi-auto mossberg recently, i have to say, wouldn't be surprised if there was one in mine as well. close range, it would be a mess, but less of a mess than letting a violent criminal back out on the streets imo.

robbing someone when you know they aren't home to prevent confrontation is one thing, violently robbing someone face-to-face with a loaded weapon is another matter entirely, good for the shop owner, just sorry he took one in the process.

It even stops them from repeating even if they were innocent, as Cameron Todd Wellingham could tell you. Well, that is if he weren't murdered by the state of Texas.

So...how innocent was Cameron Todd Wellingham?

The primary evidence leading to Willingham's arrest and conviction was the result of police inspections after the fire, which determined that the fire had been started using some form of liquid accelerant. This evidence included a finding of char patterns in the floor in the shape of "puddles", a finding of multiple starting points of the fire, and a finding that the fire had burned "fast and hot", all considered to indicate a fire that had been ignited with the help of a liquid accelerant. The investigators also found charring under the aluminum front door jamb that they believed was further indication of a liquid accelerant, and tested positive for such an accelerant in the area of the front door. Although no clear motive was found, and Willingham's wife denied that they had fought prior to the night of the fire, later testimony from a fellow inmate claimed that Willingham had confessed to starting the fire.

I volunteer. There will not be a trial. He'll take a plea if he lives and he's smart. Some crimes do not need
juries to decide fates, just common sense.
