Bank run today with a story

Today I went to the bank to withdraw $500 dollars in quarters I was looking for silver quarters or anything that stood out to me but did not find any at all lol it sucked cause I found a nickel in one of the rolls. Well anyways I went online to check my account and I noticed that the teller made a mistake and deposited $500 into my account instead of a withdraw so I called my bank up to explain what happened she was very happy I called and told them this just did not want the teller getting fired from her job for being $500 bucks short. Has this ever happened to anyone before? It was fun logging on and seeing more money in your account haha image but its all fixed now.

    Yep.
Happened about 4-5 years ago (I got half dollars and quarters) and it was for about $300 or so.
I was chatting with them, as they knew me, and it was near closing. My son was with me and so we finished chatting, got the coins, got the receipt and left.

Got home, looked at the receipt, and I called them back immediately....they had reversed the transaction similar to what you mentioned.

They said that they would have caught it, eventually, but it would have been painful to find, so they appreciated my telling them.

I would love "free money", but it wasn't really "free" and someone would have been in a heap of trouble over it, so I never thought twice.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

One time I got my receipt for a deposit and they had added a zero to the amount. If I remember they deposited $17X,XXX for me instead of $17,XXX. I circled around and informed them of the error.

Never happened to me. Nice of you to make that call. She would have been $1,000 short!

About 35 years ago I was making a cash withdrawal and after the teller counted it out I quietly suggested she do it again. She did, took the $30 extra bucks from the stack and said thanks. She had a nice smile.

You absolutely did the right thing, but they would have quickly sorted it out. In the history of large banking errors there aren't too many cases of people who actually got away with something.

I found an unexpected $84,000 deposit to my credit union account several years ago. When I immediately called the bank to give notice, the service rep. speculated that it was an amount that probably was part of a home purchase transaction. She said I couldn't even keep the accrued interest for the time it was in my account. image

  • About 10 years ago, I made a $250.00 mail in deposit into a Dividend Re-investment Plan of a Dow 30 company. When my monthly activity came, it showed the deposit as consecutive numbers: $1,234.56. It has puzzled me for years. BTW, no, I didn't say anything, jsut waited for it to "self-correct" during company auditing. It didn't, the company has merged with another hugh company, and the amount of $ and shares purchased has remained stable, so the error "stuck". Maybe I should have done something, but I didn't. I guess I have a little larceny in my heart.

  • Years ago, I ended up with an extra $10 cash from the bank. I think I noticed it when I got home. I gave it to the neighbor girl who was gyped of $10 by the same bank a short time previously. I trust that girl. Evidently, the bank did not.

Nowadays they catch stuff like that eventually, transactions are triple checked, with really good records...but just the same thank you for your honesty.

you did the right thing image (she would have actually been $1,000 off on her records, the $500 she credited by mistake and the $500 debit from your account that was not originally recorded)

Yeah, just before X-mas, I went to deposit one check for $1111 and some change and after couple of days when I check online I saw that they deposited only $111 image Good think, that they make those scans of the check and are able to fix the mistakes image
