Would PCGS assign a numerical grade to this coin?

Thank You.

I think it will get BB'd for the heavy chops. I've seen worse in numerical PCGS holders, but they were key dates.

My guess would be cleaned, so no.

To my eye, the coin looks cleaned and damaged, in addition to being chop marked.

In my opinion, the chopmarks are fine. However, the coin does look like it was dipped and stripped at some point, so I do not think PCGS will place a numerical grade on it.

You're not saying that PCGS BB's for dipping, are you? image

    Details only.
    I brake for ear bars.
  • Note: NGC did not put "cleaned" on the holder, which (I think) they would have if in their opinion it was.

    Thank You.

There can be multiple problems with the coin and TPGs will only ever list one. The coin can have damage, holes, cleaning and be bent, but the TPG will only put one on the holder. FWIW.

I don't see any damage other than the chop marks. Yes. it's been dipped bright but so have countless other coins that are in PCGS slabs with numerical grades. Submit it and see what they think.

  • Perhaps, I didn't put my question clear enough.

Does PCGS assign MS numerical grades for Trade Dollars with chop marks?

    Thank You.

    Yes, but not that one.

    It will get BB IMO.

This, which equates to a "no" PCGS will not provide it a numerical grade. PCGS will assign numerical problems to Trade Dollars that are chopmarked, provided that the coin does NOT have any other problems.

Both NGC and PCGS problem coin holders have a problem: They typically only display the most significant problem with the coin. There are often other problems, in addition to the one specified on the label, and this coin is clearly cleaned. With all due respect, if you cannot see this, then I think you should stick to buying CAC stickered problem free NGC and PCGS examples.

Put another way, you could attempt to cross this over in the NGC slab and select "no details"; however, it would be a total waste of time and money in my opinion.

I don't know how anyone could say it was cleaned from those pictures. Almost every Trade Dollar looks cleaned when you "can" see the pictures.

  • OK. Thanks for the opinions.

Although this coin is NOT for sale, any opinions on market value?

    Thank You.

Sorry but I would rather have a sink hole in my back yard than that coin.

I don't think you would ever see more than VF money which is around $180, and frankly, I wouldn't buy it unless you were selling it below melt. This will be a hard sell.

If it's not cleaned, about $350. If it is, about $200

The chop marks translate to "AU58". What a coincidence!image
