Outbid at the FUN show 0 for 9

Just got outbid on my last coin. To you sir or madam (who win) I salute you and hope you enjoy your winnings.
But still in the game with one coin in the world and ancients auction.
Or did I just jinx myself.

I bid one one coin - was outbid - found an identical coin - same grade at PCGS
and saved 50% of what the coin is at now at HA. My new coin is also more attractive
than the coin at the FUN auction.
There are quite a few other coins I am tracking and have a list to go over to decide
what to bid on. I don't want to throw out a bunch of bids only to win them all !!
I spotted one lot that I thought I had to have - its now double what I would ever pay.
Another has caught my eye - and a few other Barber collectors - so there may be some
blood spilt...

Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !

One coin I really wanted has a silly reserve well above what I feel is the max for it. The high bid before the reserve was posted was only 30% of the reserve amount.
There are six or so other lots that I would want, all already going for much more than I would pay for them. No way will I win any CAC Gold stickered coins. I don't know if bidders simply want to collect the Gold stickers, or if they intend to submit for a higher grade. Heck of a gamble to bid as if the coin was in a holder at the next higher grade.
The later auction with no floor bidding appears to be stagnant, probably bidders waiting to see how the main auction ends.

Probably true in many if not most cases, but these days I attend plenty of auctions which get bid up a week before the sale, then open and close at that number in the live session.

This is very true John, especially over the past couple of years. Though, in the upcoming Americana sale, I bet there are not many lots in the colonial session that open and close to the internet

I agree.

once the gavel is dropped. It's only after the fact when you get the coin in hand do you find out if you did good or bad. Being the highest bidder in the nation is not always
peaches and cream.

Aint that the truth. Walk the floor and you just might be better off.

Between the jump to 17.5%, more stringent limits on credit cards (used to get lots of FF miles that way), and more expensive personal tastes, I'm bidding much less frequently. If I can view the coins in person, fine. If not, I'm now usually working through an agent who can look, evaluate, and do the bid work on my behalf. So far it's been a big improvement. I learned the hard way to decide what it's worth to me up front and let the chips fall where they may.
Right now I'm watching about 10 coins, but only 1 or 2 seriously. So far, I'm OK on the one I'd really like, but I give myself about a 50% shot of actually getting it.
One thing about the FUN auction is that you know everyone is watching closely. Anything of actual quality will likely go for strong money. Anything you end up getting for cheap deserves a closer look.
