DID YOU KNOW: The first standardized coins were produced by the Lydians in what is now western Turkey in the seventh century B.C. They were made of electrum, a naturally occurring amalgam of gold and silver. Find out more unique facts here: http://bit.ly/VRH6Mi and tune in to the finale of Mankind The Story of All of Us, Tuesday at 9/8c

<< <i>It's a link to the history channels website, I just clicked it. >>
I believe what DeliaBug was getting at is that the link is not recognizable as to where it goes and that in today's environment of link-based malware it is not wise to simply trust everyone who posts a link. Perhaps the link was shortened using one of the various online resources that allow folks to do so, but I would not click it, either.

No, the point you just made is that you don't understand how malware works. If you hover on the links you posted, the real link to the history channel is visible. In the OP, it is not.
<< <i>No click linky, but I read the first coins minted were from gold nuggets found in streams in Turkey.
Actually the material was electrum, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver.

i concur. i also mouse-over links often times before clicking and it shows the site to which the link is linked and with re-directs the risk may only go up a little, but it does go up.
Since re-directs are either for some sort of earnings or to save space, neither of which is required in our posts, why even do it?

You're both right. "Electrum" is a fancy word for the natural alloy of gold/silver found in placer gold of that area.

Electrum isn't a "fancy" word ... it's the correct word.

Yes I did. When starting out in a new field or hobby it is wise to always research the beginnings of such to have a clearer understanding of the history behind it.

If the History channel says it then odds are high it isn't true.

You mean the Allies didn't defeat the Nazis? The French Revolution was unsuccessful? There wasn't really a moon landing?

All you ignorant people that don't get how computers work and say "Oh, don't click that link, it could be dangerous!" irritate me to no end. Educate yourself about how viruses, trjoans, and malware work before you get all uppity about a shortened URL. >>
Yeah, you ignorant people make me sick! Learn how computers work you irritating newbies. Jezuz, there should be a test that has to be passed before anyone gets to go online. OMG how do I tolerate all of these people doing stupid things? You people can only hope to become an advanced user like me.

Because he's using a URL shortening site called bit.ly. You're scared to click a link on the web? That's stupid, any modern-day operating system and any modern-day browser will easily defend against any malicious scripts that can run unbeknownst to you. You can't get malware on your computer from just clicking a link unless your internet settings are quite literally bottomed out and custom edited to allow anything on the page to run.
I go to all kinds of crazy sites an download all kinds of shady crap all the time, including torrents of music, games, and movies, all on a PC and on a Mac too! Guess how many times I've been hit by a virus, malware and/or trojan?
Zero.

PS: If you're still using IE (I'm going to assume you probably are), why? Why in gods name would anybody subject themselves to that if they had a choice. Firefox, Safari, Chrome, they all are miles ahead of IE. >>
You're awesome. Really awesome!

If you can find any research whatsoever that indicates this is not true as it applies to electrum please inform the forum.
