1880-CC (8/High 7) VAM-5 Toned Prooflike Morgan Dollar -- (iPhone, Digital Camera & Auction Phot

StuartStuart Posts: 9,831 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here's a new 1880-CC (8/High 7) VAM-5 Toned prooflike Morgan Dollar purchased at the recent Houston SW Money Show. What's different about this photo post, is that it's my first attempt to photograph digital coin images with my iPhone...

Compare the Top 4 Images taken with my iPhone, versus the bottom 2 Original Auction Images... I will probably also try to image this with my digital camera, however I was stunned by the quality of the handheld iPhone Images. image

I was able to examine this coin in hand prior to purchasing it. -- Would you have purchased this coin based solely on the Auction Images? image

How are you taking them with your iPhone? Any added tech and what iPhone (3GS, 4, 5)?
    Thanks,

<< How are you taking them with your iPhone? Any added tech and what iPhone (3GS, 4, 5)? >>

sniocsu: In reply to your above quoted question, I'm using a standard iPhone 4, with no added tech. I placed the coin slab on my desk and hand held the iPhone to take the photos. I was careful to optimize the focus and partially used the zoom feature (i.e. not maximum power zoom). Used diffused natural sunlight from a window, and no flash.

The more experience I gain with digital imaging of coins, the more I realize and appreciate that technique and lighting angle are usually more important than the specific technology that one uses.

MorgansForever: Thanks for your kind words about my new 1880-CC Toned PL Morgan! She's definitely a keeper! image

    << MS? >>

CMCART: In reply to your question, yes this coin is Mint State graded NGC MS-64 Prooflike.

The coin was much more eye appealing in person, than in the Auction Photos (bottom 2 images).

I typically only attend one coin show per year with a live auction (Houston SW Money Show), during which I have the opportunity to examine the coins in hand, after having viewed and prioritized them via online digital images.

After reviewing my purchases over the years, I have been most pleased with the coins that I've selected in hand vs those that I've purchased based on digital images. For me it goes without saying that any purchases made prior to seeing the coins in hand, must have a return privilege.

JoeyKoins: Thanks for your kind post. I'll add one more interesting thing to your list, of why I absolutely love this coin -- the 8 over High 7 (VAM-5) Overdate Variety.

One of my other favorite Morgan Dollars is the 1880/79-CC (Rev '78), which adds yet one more interesting feature -- the Reverse of the 1878 first year Morgan Dollar! image

Congratulations. The first thing that came to mind was "Wow... CC and an error..." and to have it proof-like, in an MS64 holder makes it all that more special!

I took these most recent images today with my digital camera, for comparison with those taken previously with the iPhone, and the original auction images.

sniocsu: Actually when you compare the higher resolution images (below), I think that the digital camera images are clearer and more definitive.
However, I was quite surprised with the level of quality that can be achieved with the camera function of an iPhone, handheld using natural diffused sunlight.

Joey: I've added the following overdate closeup photo that I excerpted from the iPhone photo that depicts the Prooflike reflectivity. I did not enlarge or magnify the iPhone image, but uploaded it to Photobucket in full raw image size, which displays on the Forum without having been decreased in size by the Photobucket application.

Here's a pretty good look at the 1880-CC (8/High 7) VAM-5 Overdate, considering it was taken with an iPhone and no added technology... image
