Civil War and Reconstruction final tomorrow, post a coin 1861-877!

Last time I did this, I got an A on my test, for the midterm I didn't post here and I got a B.. Seems like a sign to me!! Post a coin from either the Civil War or Reconstruction period following!

Absolutely beats studying! I showed the prof my 1864 and 1865 seated dollars and an 1863 IHC and he liked me after that. Its always easy to get in well with history profs. I told him I was going to join the Sons of Confederate Veterans when I could track down my ancestor that fought for the Confederacy and he helped me track down my great great grandfather.

I am presently reading this book. it is a very interesting read and follows Grant through the war and into the problems he faced in dealing with reconstruction as President. 1871-1872 was almost like a second Civil War in some parts of the South, with the backlash from the passing of the 15th Amendment.

Grant's presidency was characterized by scandal and corruption that he was (for the most part) unaware of. He was a much better general than president. With the rise of white terrorist organizations like the klan, in the 1870's the radical republicans almost just gave up on reconstruction as a whole in the south in many southern states the 15th amnendment was ignored up into the 1960's. My prof told us about an instance in a small East Texas town where whites would buy and dig graves for African American Republican voters in the 1870's and show them where there free graves would be if they continued to vote Republican. This and other not "technically" illegal scare tactics, such as poll taxes and literacy tests kept African Americans away from the polls and insured Democratic Party dominance by the mid 1870's in the south. Unfortunately, the widespread corruption of Grant's administration, westward expansion and the Indian Wars occupied the minds of Northerners by the mid 1870's and they had all but forgot about the rights of the freedman in the South.

Describe how Reconstruction would have been different for the South if Lincoln hadn't been assassinated.

Much easier for the South, Lincoln favored a much more conservative form of reconstruction. Although the Radical Republican ruled congress might have been able to over rule his vetoes like they did to Johnson because of their overwhelming numbers. Lincoln was a much better compromiser though and he might have held more influence over congress. If Lincoln was still alive, reconstruction would have undoubtably been more effective. The south would have recovered quicker financially and the freedman would have been safer (in my opinion).
