Updated: Silver Dollars, Real or Fake? - Pictures Up

Update: My brother nullified the trade and sent them back. Thanks for everyone's help!

This is from my brother and I told him to check with the experts here:

I recently picked these up in a trade and I wanted to check to ensure that these are legit Morgan and Peace dollars before I mail off my part of the trade. Unfortunately I do not have a precise enough scale that will accurately provide the mass of these guys.

So what's your guys' opinions.... Fake or Real? Thanks!

Just as a peice of friendly advice, if your brother cannot determine between genuine and non genuine silver dollars, he probably should not be making trades.

Well, for what is showing, the coins look to be genuine.

go to "... share ..." then > "Direct Link" and use those.

the 35-(?) is heavily damaged and worth only silver value.

Camera phones can take surprisingly good photos. See if you can get a little closer pictures.

Okay, all dollars are up. Rampage, point taken. In his defense, he was sent these first with the option to send them back so it was low risk. In hand, the 1888-s Morgan does not seem right.

That one stuck out to me as well. Looks bad. The others seem okay but hard to tell based on the photos. Check em with a magnet and scale.

That's what I thought too! The 8's almost look doubled, the color is off, and there are major planchet flaws.

I think the 1888-S is counterfeit given the images provided. A few of the coins are damaged via rim bumps, scrapes, scratches, etc. I'd send the entire group back.

The '88-S Morgan is a $200+ coin in that condition. It is VERY suspect.

    The others look fine.

From the pics I would say,

the 88-s Morgan definitely is a fake,

I can't tell a thing concerning the Peace dollars.

Hi, I would take a long hard look at this batch (with a good scale and a micrometer).

Not only do I not like the Morgan, but the Peace Dollars aren't so hot either.

Look at the Reverse of the 1923, first two pics.

Now look at the Reverse of the 1927. Note the similarity of the weakness/strength in 'One'. Also, note the same 'stain' extending from about 2 o'clock on the rim into the interior.

Both these reverses (1923, 1927) are *VERY* similar....and that ain't right.

I think your peace dollars are ok.. common dates are not usually counterfieted. especially in such worn condition. The 88 looks funny , but I think its your pictures.

It's your brother for criminey sake! Tell him you have to validate their authenticity before the deal can be consummated.

Have a dealer look at em or put $19.95 on the table and get a better scale.

    Where'd he get them?

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Modern made counterfeit Peace dollars, made without silver (probably in China) in apparent circulated condition do exist. They sell them at flea markets and gun shows and any place else that they can. With melt on a genuine coin over $23, a base metal counterfeit is a profitable venture.

The fact that many of you are still fooled by fakes such as these is not a little bit frightening.
In your defense, the coins are not in hand, but still.

You can conclusively determine those common date, circulated, melt value, Peace dollars are counterfeit from the images? I can't, no. Could they be? Sure, but they're worth $25/ea if genuine.

Those look odd. Color, surface wear pattern, dates. "Fake enough" for me to move on. Get a scale.

The star on the reverse between ONE * UNITED is doubled
