So how do you find a semi-rare coin at a conference?

I have a couple pretty rare coins that I would like to try to purchase at the FUN Show.

They are coins where they are rare enough that you see them only 1 time in a year at auction. So not "unique" just not easy to buy any time image

My question: How do I go about finding the coin? (It is not at auction at FUN)

Is there a best method of searching for these type of things. (I've already checked most dealer inventories)

Thanks in advance for any help!

Collectors Corner has a feature where coins that a dealer will have at an upcoming major show are highlighted. I would suggest trying there first.

Also, if you know which dealers specialize in the series matching the coins you want, then check with those dealers first.

  • Thanks Rich, but they are coins which pretty much never appear on "Collectors Corner" lists. I always check there image
  • Why don't you try a "Wanted to Buy" (WTB) listing on this forums' Buy Sell Trade forum?

Well, they might show up there. I know there are a lot of very rare coins on that site.

Disclosure note: I am a dealer on Collectors Corner.

When I am searching for a rare coin at a big show I walk the whole floor and ask every dealer if they have the dates and denomination I am looking for. It takes a lot of time but I have had some great success in the past. I have also been surprised a few times like the time a world coin dealer had a rare U.S. coin I was looking for tucked away in their stash behind the table. You never know.

If they are rare enough that they NEVER appear on Collectors Corner, they could be on the bourse at FUN, but there is a chance that they will not be on display. If they are that rare, you might elicit the assistance from a specialty dealer.

You need to be working at the next level. Pay a finders fee/commission to a Pro. Julian comes to mind....

A WTB listing on the BST can bring some things out of the wood work if one is willing to pay the price for them. I have also had luck on the registry forum when it was more lively doing that.
  • Another thing is to find out what dealers will be at FUN and which ever one specializes in those coins.

Call them before the show. Maybe one of them might have a way to get that coin for you.

If your coin is part of any registry sets, contact the people that have those sets. That person may be able to tell you who has that coin for sale.

  • Another thing is to email a want list to any dealers you may know.

I think rich said it best,

I would try the on line bourse floor at collectors corner, first, but only certain dealers use this.

I would try to locate the dealers who specialize in specific areas of the coin you are looking for:

example : If I were looking for seated and bust material, i would check rich's table for sure, dick o, and few others

also a few others that deal in a wide spectrum of stuff like HLRC, jjteaprty, etc, gary adkins, etc

If I were looking for say rare date gold, i woudl try doug w, john hamrich etc.

One thing I also like to do is to search the individual dealers website just before the show commences, sometimes you can see something that intrests you and hit them first.
if your really intrested in pursuing a coin, it might be a good idea to call them and let them know you are intrested in a specific coin and are coming too the show to view it
i do that now, i missed a great opp earlier this year on a 1823/2 quarter, saw it on hlrc site that it would be available at philly, waited until the show opened and somebody already snatched it up.

If you have not been to FUN before, its a bit overwhelming with between 1200-1500 dealers. Of course half those will not at all carry what your looking for...but you still have to look. My basic strategy is to wear comfortable shoes and start walking at one corner in whatever direction pleases you. Take note of who has what, finish your walk (it may be a day or 2) and then start talking turkey with those you find who have what you want. I will be there. Good luck, maybe our paths will cross.

For something as rare as a "once per year" item, you need to find a specialist in that area and inlist him/her for help. By chance, what is the item?
