What I got in change at the pizza place today...

After ordering and paying for my pizza I put the change in my pocket and went to my seat to wait for my number to be called. While placing my order, my 3 year old great niece who was standing beside me at the time, had, unbeknownest to anyone, picked up a sucker without paying. After being seated her mother noticed and asked me if I would take her and return the sucker. When I got to the counter, instead of returning the sucker I thought it might be a good "teachable moment" about taking things without paying for them. After the little lesson I told her I would buy it for her. When I pulled change from my pocket to pay for the sucker, I noticed a silver edged coin which at first I thought was Canadian. It wasn't. In fact, I received 3 silver quarters in the change from paying for my pizza. I about flipped. Then it hit me... there may be more in the register. After paying for the sucker I asked the man if he would please check the adjacent register for silver quarters (he was operating the register next to the one which I paid for my pizza) and that I would buy all he had. I was afraid this might be a deal killer. Luckily no one else was in line and he had the time. He looked confused and asked "what do they look like". I was starting to sweat by now, thinking someone, like the manager, was going to hear us and nix the deal. I told him what to look for, and he opened the drawer. At first glance I saw several silver quarters. He looked at the girl that waited on me and asked her if it was ok. She said sure and that ealier someone had brought in a role of them. After he was done looking I bought 20 more, at face value.

A total of 23 silver quarters at face value. The oldest a 1935 in F. Several VG-F and a few XF-AU. Definitely my best silver score in recent time.

Sorry, but when I hear these stories I always think some punk stole a collection and is spending it for pizza at face value.

Sorry, but when I hear these stories I always think some punk stole a collection and is spending it for pizza at face value.

A few years back, a coworker of mine moved into a first floor apartment of a house. An old lady had lived in the aparment for years before she passed.
There was an old stove that had a cabinet attached and tucked in the back of the cabinet was a cooking pot full of silver - dimes thru dollars. My coworker had no idea what he had found and actually was using some of the coins in the vending machines at work until another coworker saw what he was doing.

You just never know. Not everyone is a coin collector and there are still a lot of people that have no idea our coinage was once made of silver.

My sentiments exactly. And I sincerely hope that was not the case.

That said, I can't believe the "help" were almost clueless about the value in front of them.

As for a "tip", it is a non-tipping restaurant. They don't wait tables. For those in south west Ohio, it's Marions Pizza. Very good pizza.

It's obvious most of these are not coin collections once you see a few of them. Coin collectors
try to get a coin of each date so if they were collections then there would be nearly as many nice
XF '34-D quarters as there are 1964 quarters. Most of the coins would be in excellent condition.

It simply doesn't work this way. The vast majority of the coins are the sort of junk that circulated
in 1964; XF 1960 and G 1935 and some slick standing liberties.

It was the public that hoarded the silver from circulation and over the years some of these have
made their way back to circulation. Obviously it's possible the roll of silver quarters here might have
actually been stolen from a collector but as always it's not the simplest or most likely scenario.

Most collector coins of all sorts seen in circulation were released by coin collectors or dealers quite
intentionally. Most of the rest were released unintentionally. But there are significant amounts of
old coins released by the public because they just don't know. A lot of the valuable coins other than
moderns seen in circulation were unintentionally released by collectors.

I use to work in a Pizza Parlor while in high School and i use to get lots of silver from kids raiding their dad's silver stash. I use to get several silver certificates also. In all, I bet I got over a $100 face value in silver during the 2 years I worked there. But, that was back in the mid-seventies!!!

One thing that I think happens is this. Grandma or mom dies, there is a little stash of silver coins and whether anyone in the family knows their value or not, mostly they are in a hurry to clear out grandma/mom's stuff, so the easiest thing to do with the coins is roll them up and take them to the bank. Obviously there can be theft involved, but I tend to think that some of these come from people whose relatives have died and they are just cleaning things up.

    Congrats!....Got to love it.

I had the same thing happen to me a few years back, only I was at a boating store. The clerk didn't want to give up his quarters though. Luckily I had about 20 in the truck ashtray and swapped him out. I knew there were still some left in the cash register when I left. Almost went and got change and returned for the rest. Silver at the time was only $10 or so.
