Rock tumbler

I was reading a post this morning about removing green something from a nice 1853-o half and it reminded of something that happened to me a few years back that I thought some of you might get a kick out of. I was called by a older lady about buying some of her late husbands coins that she had. I set up a time to meet with her in a couple of days. When I got to her house she put this empty pan on the table in front of me and said she would go get the coins. When she came back with a 15 LB. rock tumbler drum and open the drum and poured water, grit and coins into the pan in front of me. They sure were clean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No dates on most of them, Quarters worn down to the size of a nickel and were those dimes small! I felt really bad when I explained to her that she had just ruined all of these coin. She thought a week in the tumbler would make them look better. There was a bright side to the story as she then brought out a bunch of graded coins from PCGS and NGC that she was not able to get out the holders to get them cleaned. It always amazes me when people think all coins need to be bright and shiny. Have a great day, Jim

    Was the rock tumbler ok?
Sometimes so much abuse will damage the motor.

Hi, I never checked on the tumbler as I was so dumbfounded over what she has done.

There was a member on another forum I am a member of who was actually trying to promote/defend his use of a rock tumbler on coins. Had pictures of before and after. Needless to say he got flamed pretty hard. So apparently there are more than one of these people out there.

The lady I had the deal with had everything from Morgans or Peace dollars to dimes in the tumbler. I know that most all were silver as I help her in sending them off scrap silver as I did not want to deal with them. Jim
