so how many coin shipments to PCGS are missing

I keep reading threads about lost shipments of coins to PCGS ...
Can anyone total up the number of stolen/missing shipments?
Is this a new development or has this been happening all along?
Should we not ship coins to PCGS for a while until this all clears up and the mystery is solved?

maybe 5 right now are known plus 1 more that went through anaheim not addressed to pcgs?
I guess someone wants Christmas cash.
(speaking of which: anyone find ridiculously low priced coins for BIN on eBay lately?)
<< <i>It would likely be impossible for PCGS or the USPS to know how many packages are stolen, damaged or otherwise missing. >>
does this mean I can jump to conclusions??!?!?!?! please!??!
I guess i've been really lucky so far.
Still it's such a rash recently, it makes me want to not ship for a while.

I am One of those 5 but was the first to report it only to be told oh don't worry it will show up, since day 4 I knew it was gone, called everyone and did everything I could, 21 days later I am still waiting to hear if anyone is investigating this. Tough lesson to learn and to bad others had to happen after mine and we still don"t know what was is the other boxes. Would be nice to have a master list of what is missing. Oh well its not a house breakin or a robbery of a coin dealer, its just a Postal Employee who is a thief and you have to expect that shipping priority mail, whatever...............
I used to be famous now I just collect coins.

This is sad news and shows that there is no communications between the staff at pcgs. You can tell them if you call back its NOT A RUMOR It is a FACT. Why should they REQUIRE registered?
<< <i>and its sad that our host will not POST this as a requirement, but again no loss to them..................
They already recommend registered mail:
Q. What carrier should I utilize to mail my submissions to PCGS?
A. PCGS recommends sending your submissions via USPS Registered Mail to PCGS, P.O. Box 9458, Newport Beach, CA 92658.
I'm sorry your package was lost/stolen, but PCGS is not the responsible party here. Seems kind of unfair to be sniping at them over this when it's the post office that has failed to perform.
<< <i>You can be SURE if someone was shipping me something incredibly important for my business, and I valued their importance to my business, I wouldnt care if it was not happening AT my place of business, but i would make darn sure I was on top of things at my receiver if things went missing. And I would certainly make sure ALL my customers knew of said issue and make adjustments to their shipping is more security was warrented. But i would not ignore the issue. The people making glib statements didnt lose anything --but they would change their tune if one of their items went missing. >>
You are right on with your whole statement.
I will not even renew my subscription unless things change and I am not alone in my assessments.
We need some answers not denials.
<< <i>You can be SURE if someone was shipping me something incredibly important for my business, and I valued their importance to my business, I wouldnt care if it was not happening AT my place of business, but i would make darn sure I was on top of things at my receiver if things went missing. >>
How does anybody here know PCGS is "not on top of things"? Do you suppose that PCGS has someone they can dedicate to providing running commentary on the issue? And just what do you expect PCGS to do about a problem at the post office, anyway?
<< <i>I would even consider changing my shipping address until the issue was resolved. >>
Change thier shipping address to where? Sounds like the problem is at a sorting facility, so a change would have to be to a location far enough away that packages didn't go through the suspect factility. So let's say they do this. Once the packages have arrived at the new location, how are they secured and delivered safely to PCGS's office? And who pays for it?
<< <i>But i would not ignore the issue. >>
The fact that PCGS isn't commenting minute by minute on this is not evidence they're ignoring the issue.
<< <i>The people making glib statements didnt lose anything --but they would change their tune if one of their items went missing. >>
I've had packages lost and never once insisted that the recipient was somehow accountable for solving the problem. PCGS already recommends Registered Mail for security- sounds like they already are looking out for their customers. Based on the lack of patience with USPS Registered Mail shipping times displayed on this board, it is highly unlikely PCGS would ever expect to get away with requiring that customers ship that way. And how would they do that, anyway? Refuse shipments that do not come by Registered Mail? How would that be any better for customers?
edited to add... How does anybody here know that PCGS isn't this very minute doing exactly what the post office has told them to do in order to help solve the problem?
This week I will be sending in a few pricey coins, including my avatar coin, and you can bet your bum I'll be sending them registered, still in a large box, taped to the hilt.
You can never be too careful.
And what's the problem with waiting a few extra days when something's really important?

What I wonder is that we pay the return shipping. It was always registered. Now they charge the same as registered shipping but ship priority mail. There has been a few times when the carrier has left a box of PCGS graded coins on the doorstep.

If you can never be too careful, why not drive to PCGS and deliver them by hand? Or better yet use Brinks?

Does this happen when you select "Signature Required" on the submission form? I had that happen once, very frustrating, but everything worked out.

If you can never be too careful, you shouldn't own coins in the first place. Even if you never ship them, something could happen to them.

Because...........the kids get upset when their candy goes missing!
Come on folks, I can understand Tommy's frustration but sheesh. How many hundreds of items get shipped to PCGS on a daily basis?
Tommy's goes missing and now Registered Mail is to be REQUIRED?
BTW, the uhhh, what was it OPA called it, oh yeah, "Recommendations" (cleverly masked as "Submission Instructions" on the back of the Submission form) states:
"Ship via U.S...................."
Oh heck, just read it yourself........
Why someone would interpret "INSTRUCTIONS" as "Recommendations" is beyond me! Do you suppose while in School these same folks interpreted Testing Instructions as Recommendations? Whatever.
At anyrate, PCGS should probably respond to this thread or else the masses are gonna be holding up their shipments out of fear that every single package is going to go missing and the Post Office is so ignorant of it that they never question why that mail sorter all of a sudden shows up to work in a Lambo!
I forgot to add, demeaning and chewing on PCGS as "not caring" about your plight just doesn't seem like the thing to do since, if the package has been lost, it was certainly nothing that PCGS did to cause that loss.

I have not gotten anything back from PCGS in a long time, but what do the CS or shipping departments have to say about that? I was thinking that making registered a requirement would turn off a lot of the express service submitters. For that reason and others, I don't ever see PCGS requiring any kind of specific method for shipping coins to them.

My name is Corbin and I'm working in the PCGS Customer Service Department. When you send your valuables over to PCGS, we recommend that you ALWAYS send your packages Registered Mail. That is by far the most safest method when sending us your items. This recommendation is listed in both our FAQs and point 11 on the back of our submission forms. If your package has indeed been lost in the mail, you should definitely report the lost package to your local Post Office. Additionally, you should also click on this link, https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/mlntrcvd.aspx, and fill out a report with the US Postal Inspection Services. PCGS, undoubtedly, cares about each and every one of our customer's packages; however, it appears that you are having problems with the U.S. Post Office and not PCGS. Until we actually receive your coins, we are not responsible for your packages in transit to us. We here at PCGS sincerely hope that each and every one of your packages are found.
My Best Regards,
Corbin

Last year, I had a coin I bought go missing. The package had DC and insurance. Unfornately it was scanned as delivered. Two years ago, I sold a coin on Ebay. It went missing. I didn't blame the seller in the first instance, and I didn't blame the buyer in the second instance. I put the blame completely on the P.O. where it belongs. I didn't try and make the seller or buyer changer their shipping habits. Many people on here have had coins go missing throught the fault of the P.O. So no, I wouldn't change my tune and didn't when it did happen to me.
THE USPS IS TO BLAME.

<< <i>Somebody will never get over the loss of 2 coins!
Tom has the right to never get over this. When you set out to find a certain coin, and there are like 3 known extant, and FIND it, and your new find would likely be a new top pop to boot, blowing the existing ones away, finding that 'needle in the haystack', knowing it's going to be a special coin.......I'd likely never get over it, either. Tom has been deep into these, and the new CPG has kept him very busy.
It's not like he bought a certified coin and it went missing going to him...he hunted these down, scored them himself, then sent in the fruits of his labor to see how well he did.....then the USPS takes that goal away, and he's left with nothing but hopefully winning a claim for what he can supply receipts for. Uncertified, the USPS will likely insist on just using the receipts of the purchases for these major scores, of which there are VERY few of, with the USPS not giving a rats a$$ as to 'perceived' value..

I could be incorrect, but my interpretation of the initial comment was to believe that PCGS appeared to be taking more of a beating for the disappearance of the package than they should have and that the threads or posts were moving away from the possible loss of the coins and more toward assigning blame or motive toward PCGS for their possible loss. Others may read it a different way, but as these threads unfold in real-time that was my take.

TomB, I never thought that our hosts were taking a beating.....yes, it has been suggested they be more proactive, but this whole thing has been on the USPS's shoulders the entire time. How can you blame PCGS if they get empty boxes delivered, or outright non-delivery of items? Short of having a guy from PCGS there with a USPS employee, working on sorting PCGS packages together (which is an impossibility), there is not alot PCGS can do about it while it's in transit. Tomorrow, I'm sending a package to our hosts, Priority, just as a test, to see what happens (small box Priority, as ALL my subs have gone, just as Tom's went). Got the coins cheap, if they upgrade, it'll be a score, but if not, no biggie....in short, it's a package I MIGHT be better off having get opened/stolen, as the coins are worth less than I paid for them right now, as they sit....ONLY if they upgrade, will it be a decent score....and it's a freebie sub, so, WTH, I figured...... but I bet the box gets to PCGS, after all this BS at Anaheim.
<< <i>3rd 3 Boxes DID show up at pcgs Empty, and this does not warrant you to look into what happened?(thats right there was no coins inside) >>
What, exactly, do you expect PCGS to do about the receipt of an empty package? It's not like they can just go down to the USPS distribution center and start looking around.
<< <i>Next the post about calling pcgs yesterday and being told there is no problems and who is starting a rumor, what is up with that? >>
Do you suppose there's a possibility that PCGS was doing what the post office asked them to, in order to try to find the thief? Would you prefer a big announcement that an investigation was underway, alerting the thief and potentially allowing him to avoid detection?
<< <i>If you really think 3 packages showing up empty is not your problem than I guess that explains why no one there knows its not a rumor. >>
I really do think packages showing up empty is not the problem of the recipient. If I sent you a packge that arrived empty, would you accept responsibility for the theft?
It sucks to lose a package- been there, done that. Bottom line- you didn't ship your coins as PCGS recommended. Why not?
