Great point Trade Dollar. The originals have 9 known so it would be even more of a challenge. I read that they think the re-strikes may have been made over 30 years later for collectors. I guess I would want one of each if I was going to dream big.

I thought it would be a great mini set to have an original, restrike w/o rust, restrike with rust and copper restrike. Made an offer to Parrino for the finest original, but no go.
I'm not with TD on this. If an original is never available then the dream would be nothing but that, a dream. However, if a restrike can be had then the dream is alive and well.

Your last post is why I am so amazed that this showed up on ebay when I was just having fun looking for bust quarter varieties in the VF range. I just didn't think they were on the market that often let alone on ebay. On the other hand, lots of eyes are looking at the coins on ebay so I can see why you would put it out there with a buy it now.

<< <i>How in the total H is that coin in a holder??? It is hairlined enough to kill the grade and looks corroded to me around the date! >>
I am not an expert but I believe the "hairlines" you mention are die polish lines and the "corrosion" is die rust. The die polish lines may have been used to attempt to get rid of the rust on the die?????
Here is another thread with examples of die polish lines. I believe hairlines would be incuse grooves in the coin. Die polish will be raised in relief and show up the most on the lowest points on the coin which are from the highest points on the polished die. That is why you don't see the polish lines on the face or bust of the coin but see the lines in the field. Help me out Trade Dollar if I am wrong.

Methinks you don't understand the date nor know how to grade off an image >>
This is quite possibly correct! Sure seems like a better picture could be taken...especially eliminate all the white specks around the date area. Definately agree with the die polish explanation!

I love how this coin has 46 offers. Very nice coin.
<< <i>I would looove to see the amounts of those 46 offers on the ultra high relief >>
Me too. And I'd bet 40 or more are puerile.

Sure wish I could swim in the deep end of the pool
<< <i> I would looove to see the amounts of those 46 offers >>
. Well go on, make a 47th offer and add it to your collection. Would make a dandy avatar

No thanks - I have issues with the grade on the holder.
Didn't you own an original once??

yes, for about 2 weeks. It wasn't on my radar at the time but I bought it. When I got a nice offer, I sold it
