an ebay situation (new to me)
soo. i am the high bidder on a seven day auction, i get an email from the seller that says something to the effect of: "item will be re-listed because it didnt meet the reserve" the item didnt have a reserve, the seller had a private reserve (im assuming) on the item... didnt want to pay the extra for the reserve in the listing, took a chance, the item sold cheap and now he is expecting me to buy his "didnt meet the reserve" BS what are my options ? obviously the seller feels the coin went cheap and has a low level of integrity. but i just dont feel right letting the guy off easy.
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything

him to hold up the end of his bargain. Or else you'll be filing a complaint with Ebay. Do not mention
feedback as ebay will consider that feedback extorsion and that's a no no.

if the seller messaged all of this within the ebay message system, it is up to your discretion to nail the seller to the wall or not

If he doesn't come thru, nail him to the wall with eBay and leave negative FB.
<< <i>I agree with previous posts. Inform the seller that you expect them to amicably honor the terms of his e-Bay auction. If the seller states in an email to the OP that the item didn't meet the reserve, and it didn't have a reserve in eBay, and you tell eBay about it, how do you think eBay will react?
I think they will nail the seller to the wall for fee avoidance.
I think the seller is smart enough to know this too. So here is what I would do if I were in the OP's shoes:
Diplomatically ask him to honor the auction, as it was a no-reserve auction and you were the high bidder. Do not threaten him in any way, in this response.
If he tells you to pound sand, then I would tell him I plan to inform eBay Dispute Resolution, and indicate to them the reserve / no reserve situation. Then, in your second response, ask if he wants to reconsider honoring the auction.
If he fails again, then get eBay involved and let them (and his own email) nail him to the wall.
Just my opinion. But I refuse to let supposedly professional sellers get away with this kind of nonsense. And I don't think eBay would be real thrilled to hear that a seller is doing this.

I'd implore you to not let the guy off at all, but strictly for my own self-interest as I sell everything on eBay no-reserve with a start of .99. Guys like your seller breed uncertainty and distrust in the marketplace and deserve no mercy.

The seller is a chiseler.
I'd wait for his response, though. I think I would have told him what you just wrote, that you've sold items yourself that have gone lower than you wanted, but you had the integrity to bite the bullet. Lay it on thick.
If he/she tries to back out...get eBay involved.
He/she needs to learn now to prevent this type of behavior from recurring.
Without justifiable consequences who knows what he/she may do in the future.

Best.
If he wants to put a reserve on something do it right.
<< <i>"the reserve was in the description, and it was not met. I spoke to Ebay about it and they wanted me to let you know first" ... that sounds authentic. apparently ebay doesnt mind if you dont pay the reserve, as long as you mention it in the listing. >>
What??? Care to expand on this?

Excellent response. OP should follow this advice.
You should have paid instantly, and do so now.

I just had a seated half go for good money and the buyer claimed they thought they were bidding on a seated dollar (it said half in the title, the description and obvious in the photos). I accepted the return but I was tempted to fight it.

Sounds like the OP mis-spoke. eBay doesn't care what you pay, reserve or not. It seems like the seller was saying that eBay says that as long as the reserve is mentioned SOMEWHERE in the listing that it has to be met or the seller doesn't have to complete the transaction. Or maybe the seller just said that eBay said that when in fact eBay may not have said that. Clear as mud now?
...

Sounds made up. He's hoping you will believe him and not follow through with contacting eBay.

Well, now, let's see. EBay makes a lot of money charging for reserves for auctions.
Yet, according to what the seller says, they would allow a vendor to avoid those fees by not running a reserve price auction, just mentioning it in the auction text somewhere?
Does this sound like eBay to you?

Riiiight
Ebay can't make anyone deliver. They do charge seller fees on incomplete transactions when buyer does not agree to cancel. Also a new rule rquires seller to pay fees on items seller cancels when there is one or more bids (pays FVF on high bid at time of pulling the listing. One free pass per year on this new rule.

<< <i>seller has assured me that ebay agrees he shouldnt have to complete the transaction because he wasnt aware that he was supposed to pay additional for a reserve auction.
How many feedback does seller have? If it's only a few, he might have been unaware of the policy, but if it's a lot, then that excuse doesn't hold water.
And, unless eBay verifies the first statement above, I wouldn't believe it.

Did you really think he'd send the coin to you?

My guess is this is it....
And, interestingly enough, the seller should know by now that he/she's not supposed to list like that but seems to put "low reserve" in the description of other items currently listed. Although the Op's coin is again listed and this time w/a proper reserve.
