I'm pretty sure they did it that way 20 years ago.

Maybe with enough demand you can get a retro edition.

Here's an even better idea -

Beginning with an all new submission form on Jan. 1, 2013 the PCGS number will be optional.

I use the online form. It's much easier and more convenient for me.

It's a good idea to cite it for major varieties and when paying extra for variety attribution.
